A vibrantly coloured late 18th century Irish chimneypiece inlaid in the manner of Pietro Bossi with carved mantel shelf circa 1790 with later additions, and what a beauty she is.

Relatively little is known of Pietro Bossi, although much inlay work of the late 18th Century is commonly known as ‘Bossi-work’. An Italian craftsman, Bossi worked in Dublin from 1785 to 1798 and used coloured marble inlay and also a coloured paste inlay, known as Scagliola, on a white marble ground. Bossi’s process was a closely guarded secret and was apparently carried out behind closed doors. He left Dublin in 1798 under a cloud of suspicion implicating him with the revolutionary movement.

The Chedworth is a chimneypiece of simple architectural form. It has inset panels of generous proportions that allow the material selected to be fully appreciated. In this case, we have used Derbyshire quarried Ball Eye Blue, one of the most striking materials from The British Materials Collection, together with English Portland stone mouldings to create a fireplace of outstanding beauty and originality that celebrates our beautiful native materials.
