Is this a fake sapphire? 😱
At first, I thought the stone was damaged, but then I did some research. I’m not a gemologist (although I have basic understanding and learnings from gem courses I’ve done in the past) – I do love to learn new things and fact check 🤓
So, is this a fake sapphire? No, this is a genuine naturally grown sapphire. How do we know?
This here is called colour zoning. It occurs during the formation of the sapphire crystal over the course of millions of years.
The GIA says natural sapphires commonly develop angular zoning, reflecting their hexagonal crystal structure. Any curves banding is usually a telltale of synthetic growth.
I find this topic really fascinating, as it offers a tiny glimpse into our prehistoric past. Especially having only ever come across one, I’d keep all the colour zoning stones if I could.
