This year, I’m spending more time in monochrome, and more time drawing.

I’ve committed myself to learning slowly— online ateliers, and a couple of workshops in person spread through the year.

Not to hurry toward results, but to sharpen judgment, and learn when to hold back.

Monochrome has a way of slowing the world.
It asks you to see relationships—
how values sit together, how edges soften or hold.

These are quiet things, but they’re the ones that last.

For now, this work is about learning the language,
before trying to speak too loudly.

Reference taken by me while visiting the Vatican, Rome last year! Best trip ever! :)

I love painting deeply — yet the very depth of that love makes it intimidating to begin.

I know that once I start, I’ll fall into that quiet flow where time disappears… but taking that first step feels like standing on the edge of something vast.

How do you overcome that moment before you begin — when your heart wants to start, but fear holds you still?

I’d love to hear what helps you start again.

Eye Study — First Colour Pass (Digital Warm-Up)

I started this study on my commute — fighting with my stylus pen while trying to refine colour notes in Procreate. I’ve already done the underpainting in oil, but I wanted to experiment with the first colour pass digitally before committing to the real thing.

Trains aren’t the most stable studios, but they do make time pass beautifully. Nothing beats the feel of brush and paint, though — can’t wait to bring this one to life on canvas.

This digital warm-up helps me think about edges, transitions, and values before I bring it to life in oils. 🙂

Happy Sunday!

🎨 Every brushstroke is part of a lifelong journey—so savor the process.

I am really challenging myself here. I really didn’t notice that I took the reference in front lighting - close value range is so challenging 😅.

WIP - close grisaille

Happy painting :)

🪵✨ From the tip to the studio…

These cut-offs of plywood—rescued from their fate at the local tip—are now getting a second life in my hands. I use them as surfaces for studies, sketches, and early layers. A few are from Jackson’s Art too, but most are salvaged. The craft starts from the ground up :). They are ready for the isolation layer

There’s something beautiful about starting with what’s overlooked. These boards carry history—scratches, stains, rawness—and become part of the story …

"Two new teachers arrived in my studio—one gallops, the other waits." They couldn’t be more different.

Böher anatomical écorché, made by Andrea Felice ( ). A study in motion—muscle, energy, anatomy in full stride. But if I’m honest… the horse is a little out of my depth right now. I can feel him pulling me forward, but I’m not quite ready to follow. Yet.

Apollo torso, from Sculptured Arts Studio. ( ). Form and light - that’s where I’m starting. It’s a space to observe, to study, to breathe.

To learn how to look slowly, deeply, generously

And part of that joy? Supporting other artists and makers who pour their craft into creating these beautiful objects. I love being part of that creative chain—even in this quiet way.

If you’re waiting for the perfect place to start:
Start where something speaks to you. Even if it just whispers.

This isn’t sponsored—just my honest opinion. I’m always happy to share good work from good people when I find it.

Itala x

Have a nice week.
