Widows - Holi signifies victory, freedom and rebirth.

For many many years, widows in India have been shunned from society, stripped of their dignity and identity.
They are expected to wear white clothes, shave their hair and suppress all intimate desires. They must cook their own food and eat on their own or with other widows.

As though her being only ever existed alongside her husband. That day, not one but two people died.

In 2012, breaking away from ancient ideologies and disempowering orthodox customs bestowed upon women through no choice of their own, widowed women celebrated Holi for the first time in over 400 years.

An Indian court delivered a landmark decision into the rehabilitation and empowerment of widowed women in 2012.
On this day, colour suddenly signified victory, freedom and rebirth.

The story of Holi

A very long story of Holi cut short goes something like this:

An egotistical and arrogant king Hiranyakashyap, thought he was invincible and above god due to the powers bestowed upon him by Lord Brahma. The King could not be killed:

1. By human nor animal.
2. During either day nor night
3. Neither indoors or outdoors
4. Neither on land, sky or sea
5. By a weapon of any material

Prahlad, the kings son refused to worship his father as he was a devotee of Lord Vishnu.
This made the king mad and after several failed attempts to kill Prahlad the king set off, with his sister Holika to burn Prahlad alive.
Lord Vishnu watched over Prahlad and sadly Holika died in the fire instead. (Thus the bonfires)
The king, now really mad summoned Lord Vishnu to appear before him.
And so the Lord did! In an avatar that was half man and half lion, at the crack of dawn, under the archway using his claws to lacerate the king to his demise.

The end.

Holi

Holi, the festival of colours celebrates the arrival of spring, new life and new beginnings.

Traditionally this two day festival starts with a bonfire and ends in a friendly play of colours amongst neighbours, family and friends.

Expensive, harmful use of chemical colour powders, water balloons and liquid colour sprays has dominated the play for decades. Artificial colours are harmful to humans, animals and cause irreversible damage to our ecosystem.

This Holi we chose natural hues over synthetic. We chose flowers over water. And we chose to bond over good food with our furry friends and loved ones instead of a bonfire.

How ethical and eco-friendly was your Holi?

A story of reincarnation - The six-yard wonder.

The word ‘sari’ means a strip of cloth in Sanskrit, but for millions of women and men, the sari is more than just a piece of cloth.
It is 6 metres of cloth to be exact and a symbol of pride and craftsmanship for all those that wear it.

There are around 30 regional varieties of sari, and more than one way to wear a sari.
For example you have Banarasi from Uttar Pradesh, Kanjivaram from Tamil Nadu, Kasavu from Kerala, Jamdani from West Bengal, and Bandhani from Gujrat (to name a few!).

The sari is popular all over the world. In the western world the sari is worn during religious festivities, special occasions and weddings.
In India, the sari is an everyday attire, much like sweats and t-shirts are for you and me these days! The material is well acquainted with the tropical climate and its lightweight soft texture makes it the perfect costume.

Each year millions of Saris are sold, worn (once in some instances such as weddings), and dumped in landfill.

If you’re Indian, you’ll know that we never throw anything away. Through abit of entrepreneurial recycling, saris can be turned into fashionable furnishings and furniture, and we are honoured to be part of a revolution that aims to marginalise this type of fast fashion.
