Art shouldn’t be an afterthought.

In conversation at Decorex today, Claudia Dorsch mentioned that she always encourages clients to think about art early in the design process - something that echoed previous conversations I’ve had with Rina Patel too.

Considering art from the beginning changes everything. Scale, palette, texture, lighting, placement and installation can all be developed alongside the room itself.

For bespoke fibre art, it means creating a piece that genuinely belongs to its setting, rather than trying to find something to fill an empty wall at the end.

This AI interior visualisation features an original Knot My Name artwork and explores how it could sit within a fully considered scheme.

I love the flow of an open-plan space, but sometimes it needs a little definition.

A bespoke fibre divider creates a subtle separation while still letting light through. It becomes part of the room rather than something placed in front of it.

This piece started with a view from above.

When I was commissioned to create artwork for Mercure Hotel Thurrock, the concept centred around nearby Tilbury Fort.

Working from an aerial photograph and circular section of the landscape, I translated it into fibre, using changes in colour, texture and technique to interpret the moat, bridge, buildings and surrounding areas of grass.

From a distance, ‘Vantage’ reads as an abstract fibre artwork. Look a little closer and the landscape behind it begins to reveal itself.

I loved the challenge of taking something so architectural and translating it into something tactile and that the finished piece doesn’t immediately give away where it came from. But once you see the aerial photograph alongside it, it’s hard not to see it.

I think the most interesting interiors are the ones that don’t feel as though everything could have been bought from the same place.

Art is an opportunity to bring something individual into a space - something with a story, a connection to its surroundings, or simply something that makes you stop and look.

It doesn’t have to match the cushions. It doesn’t have to be the most expensive thing in the room. And it definitely doesn’t have to be something everyone else will like.

I’d rather see something chosen because it means something to the person or place it’s been created for.

Although for the record, I’m considerably less flexible on the petrol station sushi.

When I was commissioned to create three pieces for Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman I wanted the work to feel connected to the island rather than simply decorative.

The result was ‘Sail Away’ - three rope totems, each created using different sailing knots, drawing on Grand Cayman’s close relationship with the sea.

I loved developing something that could sit naturally within the hotel interior while carrying a story that was specific to its location.

For me, that’s one of the most interesting things about creating bespoke work for interiors - responding not just to the space itself, but to the place, the story and the people who will experience it.
