DEAL IN DETAIL | Just a stone’s throw from Deal’s historic and completely charming seafront, interior designer and colour specialist Russell Loughlan’s The House On Dolphin St carefully considered renovation of a Tudor cottage is a masterclass in restoring a building’s vernacular character after years of discordant alterations. As ever, Russell’s ingenious application of colour is guided by an instinctive understanding of tone and balance that borders on wizardry. References to additional periods create the overall authenticity of a house that has lived through the ages and taken the best details from each.
‘We stripped everything back to uncover the original Tudor floorboards and beautiful Gothic tracery. Nothing is straight, nothing is perfect, all very wonky and Alice in Wonderland and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
I ordered a few samples from Bert & May’s Medina Zellige range and, after playing around with the shapes against the colour swatches, something just clicked. It made me think of the Bloomsbury Group and the painted details and patterns at Charleston. From that moment, the whole scheme just fell into place.’ - Russell Loughlan, The House on Dolphin Street
