The Angel Oak is one of the most celebrated live oak in the United Sates and a major landmark near Charleston, South Carolina.
The tree is a Southern live oak (Quercus Virginiana), not an angel-related species. The name comes from the historic Angel family who once owned the land.
It is estimated to be roughly 400-500 years old, though some older estimates claimed 1,500 years. Most modern arborists consider the lower estimate more realistic.
It stands about 65 feet (20m) tall, but its real spectacle is the canopy: the crown spreads about 17,000 square feet. Some branches extend over 180 feet from trunk to tip.

'The Oak' by Edvard Munch (1906),
Oil on canvas, 100 × 85 cm

In The Oak, Edvard Munch conveys the grandeur and pathos of nature as a mirror of the human condition. The solitary tree dominates the composition with its twisted branches, standing resilient against a swirling, almost turbulent sky. The expressive brushwork and vivid palette dissolve the boundary between exterior landscape and interior state, making the oak appear both as a living organism and as a psychological emblem. This imagery resonates with Munch’s broader oeuvre, where natural motifs often carry symbolic weight, reflecting endurance, solitude, and the existential dimensions of life.
