Art tip: Use white sparingly.

John Singer Sargent used white very deliberately in Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose. Rather than simply lightening colours with white, he worked with subtle shifts in colour and temperature. This keeps the colours vibrant and allows the painting to glow with light without appearing dull or washed out.

Sometimes, using less white can make a painting far more powerful.
