From a simple block of stone to a creature of their own imagination.
This was one of our favourite StoneMind projects.
The students started with a block of stone and learned the basic principles of carving, masonry and safe tool use. The project was carefully broken down into small, scaffolded steps, with each stage demonstrated clearly so students always had something to refer back to.
But there was no fixed finished piece they had to copy.
Instead, they were encouraged to look at the stone, follow the process, and decide what creature was slowly being revealed. Some became animals, some became monsters, and some became something completely their own.
That is what makes this kind of work so powerful.
Each step is simple on its own, but when followed in order, those small steps build into something the students can feel really proud of. It teaches patience, confidence, problem-solving and the value of sticking with a process, even when you cannot see the final result straight away.
Real tools. Real stone. Real achievement.
