NOW is a great time to scatter wildflower seed balls 🎃
During the 🍂 autumn months, the soil will still be warm from the summer sun 🌞and there is moisture in the air, making perfect conditions to sow wildflowers and give seeds the best possible start.

Some seeds also require a cold spell to break dormancy, so autumn sowing gets them ready for the following spring, as the colder winter months provide this drop in temperature.

Sowing in autumn 🍁 also means that with increasingly likely rainfall, nature will take care of the watering for you too, so very little effort is needed to keep the seeds thriving. 😀

Scatter until first frost 🥶

Did you know? Because nocturnal pollination is so important, researchers are warning against light pollution.... Excessive or badly placed lighting disturbs the natural environment for moths and bats. Dim the lights, and give them a reason to visit next summer by scattering our half-price bulk bags this Autumn!

Don't hate me
During the Autumn, moles will be stocking their winter larder in a molehill, pushed to the surface by an excavation. Mole tunnels are excellent for aerating heavy soil, and moles are great pest controllers.

Its night 50% of the time... yet we rarely think of the pollinators and wildlife in our garden at night. This Autumn take a moment to plan your garden for them - avoid harsh garden lights and plant for night time pollinators. You can even add your name to the buglife petition asking policy makers to consider our night time wildlife https://www.buglife.org.uk/campaigns/light-pollution/dont-neglect-the-night/

Meet the garden’s most spooky cleaning crew: Sexton Beetles!
Sexton (or Burying) beetles can smell a tiny decaying leaf or creature from over a mile away and recycle nutrients straight back into the soil! Soil health is crucial for wildflower growth. Scatter Beetle Mix in Autumn to support native ground beetles :-) Right now we have 50% off 250/500 bulk bags...

50% of the time it is night, yet we rarely think about the wildlife that comes to life once the sun begins to set.

From glow-worms to badgers, from bats to salmon and from owls to toads, at least two-thirds of all animal species are active at night. This spooky season do all you can for our night time wildlife - plant for them, create spaces for them and turn off your garden light 🌙 🦇

You can even join Buglife in calling on governments to stop neglecting the night and embed the nocturnal environment in conservation plans. https://www.buglife.org.uk/campaigns/light-pollution/dont-neglect-the-night/

Like many wildlife species, hedgehogs are busy during the Autumn months preparing for Winter. As insectivores they need to consume lots to provide the energy for their long torpor.
🦔
When hedgehogs hibernate, they roll into a ball covering their soft belly and leaving their spikes facing out to protect them from predators. They will hibernate throughout the cold winter months, when insects are scarce by going into a deep sleep or torpor.
🦔
Putting out dried kitten food and fresh water in the evenings for nocturnal hogs can help supplement their diet and making insect friendly habitats will help more in the long-term. Leaving leaf-litter and longer grass benefits both hogs and insects by providing sheltered nesting sites overwinter.
🦔
Remember wildlife is happiest getting on with life so unless they appear really poorly leave them be.

Most people know bees, butterflies and birds are important pollinators for plant reproduction and agriculture, but what about pollinators who are active at night, like bats, nocturnal butterflies and moths. These equally important pollinators don’t just get less recognition — they are also less protected than their daytime counterparts.... for example, with understanding that pollination at night is really important, it becomes critical to avoid light pollution, and to plant for our night time pollinators.
The study, “Pollination Across the Diel Cycle: A Global Meta-Analysis,” was published in the journal Ecology Letters.
