PATERSON, James. A Practical Treatise on the making and Upholding of Public Roads...And a Dissertation on the Utility of Broad Wheels. 8vo. Montrose, James Watt, 1819. Chapters include: Projecting of Roads, Side-Cutting and Embanking, Upholding- Cleaning the Road, Dressing the Canals or Ditches, On Approaches to Gentlemens' Houses, On Broad Wheels, &c. PROVENANCE: Previous owner's signature on front pastedown (signature crossed through, also partially erased signature on title page), other signature on front endpaper dated 1845. Same signature as the one on the front pastedown to rear pastedown (this one not crossed through 'Captn. Jane(?) RN.' There is copious marginalia and annotations throughout in an early/mid 19th century hand. A rare and fascinating insight into road building and maintenance in the Georgian period.
