The second chapter in our Project Stories series explores evolution.

Every historic property carries the imprint of the families who have lived within its walls. At Ashdown Forest, the responsibility was not simply to redesign, but to respect, to understand the architectural heritage of the house and allow its history to inform the next phase of its life.

Robert speaks about sensitivity in renovation: retaining original features where possible, reworking existing materials, and avoiding unnecessary demolition. The approach was measured rather than performative, thoughtful reuse over replacement, longevity over trend, creating a considered continuation, a home reconfigured for contemporary family living while honouring its architectural legacy.

We’re introducing the first in a new film series: Project Stories.

This opening chapter sets the context for our Ashdown Forest project, a substantial country house with a layered past. Once operating as a care home, the building has evolved again into a private family residence.

The design process began not with aesthetics, but with understanding: proportion, circulation, landscape, and how a contemporary family would inhabit such a generous footprint.

As the series unfolds, we’ll share the transformation in greater detail, from architectural reconfiguration to bespoke furniture design, revealing how history and modern living can coexist.

And just like that, the install begins…

We can’t share too much just yet as we finalise the spaces, but we wanted to offer a few quiet snapshots, the calm amongst the chaos of site as this residential interior design project reaches its conclusion.

As the dust is swept away, the architecture begins to breathe. Spatial flow is revealed, sight-lines open, and the foundation of the design narrative comes into focus. Each room starts to come to life through the layering of bespoke furniture, considered materiality, and architectural detailing.

This stage is always one of our favourites. The shift from construction to curation. Where architectural furniture design, natural materials, and handcrafted finishes soften the structure and bring warmth, personality, and permanence to the home.

This is such a special project for us, and as we begin to install the final pieces, styling each room with intention, it only gets better.

On-Site Series - Chapter Five - Space-planning

The space planning for this project has been integral to the design from the very start. Working with such a large footprint required us to review overall flow and volume of spaces to allow each to breathe, but also function comfortably for family life.

The removal and relocation of doors has been a part of that process, to add a sense of calm where openings work with their needs, and not simply retained because they’ve always been there.

Taking Shape…
The final layers of our project in Ashdown Forest are starting to come together. Finishes are in place, masking tape is being peeled away and softer features are starting to be installed.

It’s important for us to really look at each of these stages to really get a sense of how the project will feel once complete. Yes there’s a lot of energy on-site, but we like to take a breath and really see the progress as it reveals itself.

On-site Series - Chapter Four - Dining

Designed to strengthen the spatial flow across the ground floor, the dining room was reconfigured to improve connection between key living spaces while drawing the eye outward to the surrounding landscape. Positioning, proportion and sight-lines were carefully considered to ensure the room feels open, calm and connected.

By honouring the existing architecture and framing the view beyond, the space becomes a natural pause point within the home, equally suited to everyday family meals and moments of gathering. A quietly intentional intervention that enhances movement, light and connection throughout the ground floor.

On-site Series - Chapter Three - The Kitchen

Repositioned to become the true heart of the home, the kitchen at our Ashdown Forest project has been carefully reworked to sit in harmony with the architecture of the building. More than a functional space, it’s designed as a place for gathering, conversation and everyday family life.

A timeless kitchen design that balances proportion, materiality and flow, responding to the existing structure while quietly elevating it. Crafted to feel grounded, enduring and completely at ease within its surroundings, a space that will age beautifully with the home.

On-Site Series - Chapter Two - The Stairs

The staircase has become a focal point of the Ashdown Forest project. Part of the design approach was to open the stair up, allowing it to align directly with the large front window and draw natural light deep into the heart of the house.

By opening this route through the home, the stair becomes more than a transition between floors, it becomes a moment of pause. The reconfiguration also allowed us to properly celebrate the timber cladding feature, and while not original to the property, it has become an integral part of the house’s DNA and interior architecture.

We’ve been a little quieter this week, but for good reason. It’s been all hands on deck as we reach the final stages of our Ashdown Forest residential project, a thoughtfully reimagined family home in Sussex.

Over a year on from those first sketches, exploring how a former care home could be transformed through sensitive architectural design and interior planning, we’re now immersed in the final install.

Watching this renovation project come together, while honouring the building’s past and creating spaces designed for contemporary living, has been incredibly rewarding.

We’re looking forward to sharing more of the project over the coming weeks.

We’re starting to see the finishing touches come together at our project in Ashdown Forest, and it’s a real joy to witness the spaces begin to settle.

This week has been all about lighting, carefully refining positions, adjusting angles and creating new compositions that shape how each room is experienced.

Thoughtful lighting has the power to slow you down, draw the eye and create moments to pause, and it’s in these final layers that a project truly comes to life.
