From Decorex to PAD London, we’ve been taking inspiration from the world of decorative lighting, where craftsmanship, artistry and design come together.

Both shows offered a wonderful opportunity to explore lighting as an art form, from sculptural statement pieces to intricate details that bring a space to life. It’s always inspiring to see how designers and makers push creative boundaries, exploring materials, forms and finishes to create pieces that are as much works of art as they are sources of light.

For us, these visits are a valuable reminder of the relationship between decorative and architectural lighting, and how the two can work together to create interiors with depth, character and atmosphere.

Here are a few highlights that caught our eye.

Continuing our look inside this exceptional alpine retreat in Chamonix, Part Two explores the lighting details that bring the bedroom and bathroom to life, alongside the considered lighting schemes in the w**e room and gym.

A British-inspired villa in Dubai, where lighting brings warmth and character to the home of interior designer Kate Instone .

Designed with Blush International , the scheme meets strong Middle Eastern daylight with a softer, layered light after dark. Uplights lift the four columns of the double-height entrance hall, and focused accents give vintage and heritage pieces presence without letting them dominate.

Three preset scenes, bright, mood and low, let the house change with family life.

Chalet lighting in Chamonix, where timber, craftsmanship and atmosphere take centre stage.

This Alpine retreat was designed to feel warm and inviting at every hour. The lighting works quietly within the architecture: focused pools of light draw out the richness of the wood, and softer indirect light settles the rooms into the evening. Architectural fittings sit alongside decorative pieces, so the light feels part of the interior and not an addition to it.

The result is a series of distinct moods, from bright mountain mornings to slow nights in.

Step inside an Alpine chalet in Chamonix with Sabrina Fiorina, Design Director of our EU team.

In a home built from timber, light has to reveal the grain without flattening it. Sabrina walks through how spotlights set on the beams create focused pools of light, while small uplights in the window reveals give a soft wash to the architecture. From the kitchen to the w**e room, each space has its own mood.

Kitchen, living and dining lighting at the Sky Villa, Delano Dubai: one open space, lit to move from a full table to a quiet evening.

With high ceilings and the Arabian Gulf beyond the glass, the light had to hold its own against strong daylight and then soften after dark. Downlights are tucked into recessed ceiling slots, so the ceiling reads as a clean plane and the eye goes to the stone, the furniture and the view. Each one can be angled to pick out a surface, a table or a seat.

Low level, high level and decorative layers are dimmed together, so the room shifts in mood without anything feeling switched.

A first impression is made in the first few steps.

At Sky Villa, the penthouse at Delano Dubai on Bluewaters, arrival begins with a corridor framed by travertine-clad columns. Light grazes the stone from above, drawing the eye along the length of each column, while a gentle glow at low level picks out their curves and gives them a sculptural depth.

The effect comes from contrast. Pools of light and shadow define the architecture, make the space feel larger without losing its intimacy, and quietly invite you further in, towards the views of the Arabian Gulf beyond.

It is rarely the light fittings that make a room beautiful. It is how well the lighting understands the architecture.

Senior Lighting Designer Anna Barbier shares the foundations of good lighting: read the space first, then build it up in layers. Soft ambient light to create a warm atmosphere, accent light to draw the eye to a material, an artwork or an architectural detail, and controls that let each layer shift with the time of day.
