In a Grade-listed London home, an award-winning lighting scheme was designed around a client’s growing art collection, treating the house as a home away from home built for living with and around the work.

Each piece was considered individually: precise spotlights hold the scale of larger canvases, picture lights bring a softer, more traditional touch, and discreet fittings throughout let texture and materiality speak for themselves.

At the threshold to the private spaces, a sculptural moment combines uplighting and downlighting, giving the sequence rhythm and a genuine sense of arrival.

Here, light becomes as much a curatorial tool as a functional one.

Leaf House, a residence tucked into the Cotswolds landscape, is a study in how light can shape the way a home is experienced. Every scheme was designed to draw out the grain of timber, the texture of stone and the warmth of plaster, changing the atmosphere of each room as the day moves on.

Set within a timber-framed volume that opens onto two courtyards, the kitchen and dining space at Brick Yard, the Rammed Earth House, needed light that could hold its own against acres of glazing without ever feeling exposed.

Rather than lighting the room in isolation, illumination was extended out into the landscape and courtyards beyond, adding depth after dark and keeping that strong connection to the outdoors even once the sun’s gone down.

Inside, the layers build gently: decorative fittings on the structural columns, table lamps set into the kitchen joinery, and a cluster of pendants above the dining table create a warm, ambient backdrop. Vorsa 40 fittings over the island, worktops and table then bring the focused, functional light the space needs, letting it move easily from a practical morning kitchen to an intimate spot for evening dining.

In the massage and spa area of this Lisbon townhouse, lighting was handled with real sensitivity, the goal being a sanctuary that never feels lit at all. Contour HD LED strip sits discreetly beneath the wooden bench, giving off a soft, low-level glow, while simple pendant lamps bring a gentle, atmospheric warmth. A minimal number of recessed downlights supply functional light only when it’s genuinely needed, so the space stays flexible without ever losing its calm.

It’s proof that the quietest lighting decisions are often the hardest ones to get right.

A calm, contemporary family home, built into the layers of a 19th-century Lisbon townhouse.

In the kitchen, light does quiet, considered work. Contour HD LED strip sits beneath the island bar and along the rear shelving, adding warmth and depth without ever competing with the architecture. Polespring 40 downlights wash the cabinetry and pick out the tonal variation in the artwork nearby, while a collection of pendant lamps anchors the dining table with a welcome moment of contrast.

Next door, the living room settles into something softer. Polespring 40 downlights illuminate the curtains, drawing out the texture of the fabric, while decorative floor lamps bring an intimate, evening glow. A single downlight rests on the coffee table, a quiet centrepiece within the room.

This is lighting designed to support daily life first, and to look beautiful while doing it.

A bar this glamorous comes with a lighting problem most people never think about: reflection.

In this London home, designed with Hill House Interiors, the formal drawing room’s bar is a showstopping focal point, built for entertaining, finished in high-gloss stone, polished worktops, and a mirrored splashback. Beautiful, but tricky: every one of those surfaces reflects light, and so does every bottle on display.

Our solution was precision over power. Tiny pin spots of light were used to accent the bottles individually, resulting in almost no reflection at all, while frosted LED strips were tucked deep into the shelving, positioned out of the sightline so the light source itself disappears completely.

The result is a bar that reads as effortlessly glamorous: glowing exactly where it should, with none of the glare that a space this reflective could easily have fallen into.

It’s proof that the best lighting design is often the kind you don’t notice. You just notice how good the room feels.

Some staircases connect floors. This one connects the entire home.

In this London residence, designed with Hill House Interiors, the staircase forms the architectural heart of the house: a dramatic circular void that links every level. Our challenge was to make each floor feel visually connected through light, while still giving each space its own independent control.

A sculptural pendant installation anchors the space and draws your eye upward the moment you arrive. Integrated light follows the curve of the stair treads as they wrap through the house, quietly emphasizing the form and materiality of the architecture itself.

Illuminated niches placed throughout the stairwell and hallways create focal points that strengthen the visual connection between floors. Soft uplighting backlights the sculptures on display, narrow-beam downlights add precise accents from above, and concealed lighting beneath the stone plinths creates a floating effect; an unexpected sense of lightness against such a solid material palette.

This is what we mean when we say lighting design is architecture: it’s not decoration added at the end; it’s built into how a space is experienced.

In the primary bedroom of this Palm Jumeirah apartment, the lighting scheme shifts toward something quieter and more intimate.

Contour LED strip lighting extends into the bedroom joinery and headboard, creating a gentle, inviting glow that lasts well into the evening, while decorative pendants suspended above the seating area and bedside bring a sculptural, elegant touch to the room.
