Just look up

Inspiration is everywhere.

On a recent trip to Oxfordshire, visited Blenheim palace and what caught my eyes were not just the beautiful antiques and furniture, what drew me was outside.
In the North Portico entrance are six painted eyes by British Artist Colin Gill. What a way to make an entrance.

A well designed space, has a soul.

Admiring the ornate details in this courtyard at Bait Mujallid, Damascus.

I often think of how we narrate stories through design, here I admire the story of patience and geometry, balancing of opulence with harmony.

The craftsmanship is extraordinary, the intricate inlay work, layered ornamentation that makes the eye linger for moments longer. Here nothing eels rushed not accidental, just a celebration of decades of a craft that has been horned and woven into the soul of this room.

This is inspiring, though I wouldn’t say I was a maximalist, is reflects our approach, the mixing of pattern, texture, and history, can make spaces that feel as luxurious as they look.

Exploring other means of celebrating art through non classical formats.

Admire the stained glass by Théophile Laumonnerie commissioned for Chateau Laurens. In each room, there is one piece that anchors the space.
In this bathroom, the stained glass does more than filter the light, it composes the entire room, This is the Art!
Celebrating practicality infused with craft, adding to the overall visual narrative of the room.

Extract from Adeyemi Michael’s Entitled (2018).

Inspiration is truly everywhere.

In this powerful yet graceful image, I see a palette here, the inky black as an anchor, layered with jewel tones, finished with intricate pattern and metallic accents.

I like to think of a room as a scene, where is the hero, using this image as a reference, the horse commands the street, confidently, unapologetically, beautifully.

Design tip: Don’t be afraid to let one strong, sculptural element lead the room. Everything else can support the statement.

Layering Old with new

There is this particular alchemy that comes to life when traditional tapestry meets modernist restraint, and this dining room quietly captures it.

The beautiful tapestry is beyond decoration but extends this romantic narrative. The many layers within the dining rooms transcends a place to simply dine, transforming into a gallery with clean lined dining chairs, harmonious repetition with shades of green, ochres elevating the everyday ritual of gathering around a table into something more ceremonial.

Antony Gormley, Well 2000

When designing, I am always curious about the human relationship with the space. How are they going to feel navigating and engaging in the space.

I admire Gormley’s work in the way it ask questions on humans in a space, as his work is mainly outdoors, the question of human within a wider landscape.

To create work, that is truly tailored, constantly curious not just about beauty but human psychology so the spaces are great foundations to build on goals and visions.

A home as a point of view.

A home documented during the journey of Simon Watson and Marcella Caracciolo Chia’s book The Lives of Others.

Interiors are more than decoration, beautiful objets but layered authentic environments shaped by curiosity and craft.

I love how the multiply the room and turning reflection into art, grounded by chocolate mohair upholstered seating, rich Mahogany flooring, all elements creating this cinematic value.

Interiors should reflect our goals and extraordinary living starts with a fearless point of view.

The statement

Whilst doing some research came across this chair through the collection, admiring the intricacy of the carving, a great example that furniture can be functional art.

Based on designs by Daniel Marie who served as court architect in the 17th century at both Netherlands and U.K William III, the chair is a statement.

Storytelling is essential to the success of a beautiful interior and the detailing of this chair brings with it a history that not only enriches the narrative but adds layer to a space that can anchor it.

Like one of his couture works.

Romantic details with stencil walls and door in this rich green palette at the entryway of Italian designer, Valentino Garavani’s Appian Way home, grounded with classical French flat weave rug in soft colors. A quiet runway that is timelessly elegant.

First impressions matter.

Admire this reference from Yucatán Peninsula Hacienda in Mexico.

Each space is part of a design narrative, the entrance sets the rhythm for the entire home. Like an art work, I like to consider composition, scale, this leads the eye through the space while materials and light can bring in texture. All these elements balanced together, create a welcoming space and set the narrative for what follows.

This cold air in the new year I believe brings new energy.

Exploring contrast between clarity and emotional quietness, particularly as the cold weather means more time within interior environment. How to feel intentional and warm without excess.

Came across the work of Japanese artist Yoshihiko Ueda from his Quinault show, admiring the bold restraint, the deep greens and gentle blues, echoing the spiritual connection the artist experienced.

How this is translated into interiors with use of natural materials that become characterful over time, a muted palette a single yet powerful statement, spaces that feel calm yet layered with plenty to discover.

Designing always with a purpose to create interiors that are not just beautiful but soulfully rich.
