Started the week with a stack of scrubbed buckets, a 1,200 stem picking list and checking the weather app for the 134,000th time.

I was also trying to remember if I’d already washed the school blazer and ordered new PE kit 🫣

Ending the week having picked every single stem in the pouring rain (which lasted for 4 days - not complaining though!), with a stack of buckets ready for washing again and, most importantly, three unique collections of wedding flowers harvested, conditioned, created, collected and delivered.

Time for a cheeky takeaway and a long lie down I think.

And I had washed the blazer 😇

If your wedding plans might include arranging your own flowers, or some of them, here’s my top tips:

Don’t overthink things, but DO plan what you’re going to make (30 bud vases? 6 bridesmaids bouquets?) and roughly how many stems you’ll need. Have a practice to work it out. Scribbles on a piece of paper, or a detailed spreadsheet, either way a little planning now means it’s plain sailing in the week of your wedding.

Work out where you’ll arrange your flowers & how you’ll transport them. Venues with access the day before are perfect for a little pre-wedding fun and no worries about transporting all those arrangements.

Plan to have everything finished the afternoon before. In water, your flowers will happily wait. Wedding mornings are busy enough!

If DIY wedding flowers are in your plan then let’s get all your questions answered, your arrangements practiced, and a stress-free plan in place. Join me here on the flower farm for a DIY Wedding Flower Workshop on Saturday. Head to the booking link in bio ⬆️⬇️

Happy Monday! Well, it’s Heatwave 3 and in among the early picking, late evening watering and the water company digging through our phone/internet cable 😖, I’ve had a few days to reflect. Here are just some thoughts……

☀️ Unless I’m planning on making buttonholes at midnight again (and again), we must insulate the tin roof of the barn. Although that does feel like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

☀️ Emptying trays of ice cubes into the flower buckets every few hours doesn’t really work. I need an air con unit. In Cumbria.

☀️ Sitting still enjoying the sun might be nice. Working in these conditions is a whole different world of fans, misters, wet towels and heat exhaustion.

☀️ My all round absolute vase life winners during June’s heatwave: sweet William. It’s also lucky I was late sowing next years. The seedlings would have fried.

🌻 Finally, and most importantly, I’m going to keep growing flowers for your birthdays, thankyous, little treats, weddings and farewells because you need an alternative to buying high carbon, flown, chilled, imported flowers.

I could use words like change, resilience and adaption - but whatever we call it we’re all going to have to do things (very) differently to reduce the impacts of climate change on all of us.

Has the heat got you thinking? I’d love to know ……. x

A hot week calls for a bit of flexibility - selecting blooms that can cope (sorry mint, that means you were off the list) & adapting colour schemes.

These five buckets of DIY flowers were off to dress . Thanks to for extra stems of orange geum. Perfect to coordinate with the orange and blue table decor, along with our cornflowers, sweet rocket, cooling white snowball bush, dainty aquilegia, forget me nots and contrasting wine-coloured peonies from Lincolnshire.

For Tom and Thomas’s buttonholes sweet William picked up the colour of the peonies, and I couldn’t resist some more teeny blue forget me nots. It may be a heatwave but let’s keep the romance! 💙

Back to flower farming reality this week after all the excitement and optimism of Chelsea. A heatwave in May - lovely as it is to see the sun on a bank holiday! - is not ideal.

Picking flowers is a job to be done in the cool, so tomorrow’s wedding flowers were picked at dusk on bank holiday. They’ll feature this cheerful geum (but that’s all you’ll see tonight, I don’t want to spoil the surprise 🤫)

There are seedlings to resuscitate and new plantings to keep from drying out, and this flower farmer is unable to function in 30 degree heat! And no, I still haven’t taken the straw duvets off the dahlia beds!!

It’s far from normal. The numbers are very worrying.

Wish me luck! 🥵 E x
