“How can a therapist help me if they’ve never been through what I’ve been through?”
I get asked this all the time.
Truth is, therapy isn’t about me saying, “I’ve been there too.” If that’s all people needed, we’d all just ring our mates and save ourselves the session fee. 😂
One of the biggest things I learnt during my training is that good therapy isn’t about my experiences – it’s about making space for yours.
It’s about being willing to sit with the uncertainty, the pain, the anxiety, the grief, or whatever’s going on, without rushing to fix it or make it disappear.
In fact, when I have nothing in common with a client’s experience, I often find myself even more curious. I’m not comparing it to my own life or making assumptions. I’m trying to understand what the meaning for THIS person.
My job isn’t to drag you into my frame of reference.
It’s to step into yours.
Because so much of life is spent running away from uncomfortable feelings. Therapy offers something different – a space to stay with them, make sense of them, and maybe discover something new about yourself along the way.
Sometimes healing doesn’t come from having all the answers.
Sometimes it comes from finally having the space to ask the right questions. 🌱
