It is the border you notice last and miss first.
A well-made bed rarely announces the reason it looks finished. The eye settles on a pillow before it settles on anything else, and the edge is where the quiet work happens. A plain case reads soft and unstructured. Add a wide fl**ge around the crisp cotton and the pillow gains a frame, a clean line that holds its shape against a light duvet.
Morning light finds it first. The flat weave catches the low sun, the tailored border draws a shadow just inside its edge, and the whole surface reads considered rather than simply made.
Astrid Oxford Pillowcase, £9.99. A finished edge that lets the bed look composed before you have done anything to it.
