*Open Protocol = an open protocol system is a protocol that is publicly available and has open rights of use associated with it. This allows you to appoint the service company of your choice; any fire systems company can work on an open protocol system and easily obtain replacement equipment. Closed Protocol = closed protocol systems are restricted to the manufacturing/installation company (or group of companies) and there is no compatibility between other brands of equipment. Programming software is also restricted and not for general purchase - effectively the same company must supply, install, maintain and upgrade all of the components.
