Nowhere Man by Deborah Stone
Read Along: 13th Jan – 13th Feb

Deborah Stone does a fantastic job of winding twists and turns all the way through Nowhere Man. Although this book does cover some traumatic themes I didn’t feel like they were too heavy. Please check trigger warnings if you are sensitive to some topics.
I loved the way Stone left lots of mini cliff hangers with the change of POV every few chapters. Between that and the short chapter length I just had to keep reading and flew through it. You slowly start to put pieces together but it’s quite deceptive at the same time. I was confused but in a good way where I just had to keep going and find out the ending.
Loved this book! And I will be looking out for more by Deborah Stone in the future!

Aristotle for Novelists: 14 Timeless Principles on the Art of Story by Douglas Vigliotti
Date: 13th January - 13th February

This little gem by Douglas Viglotti is a must read for aspiring writers as well as a useful resource for experienced writers. Viglotti breaks down the 14 Principles from Aristotle is an easy to digest sometimes humorous way which always the reader to reflect and relate. Personally, I have found it a useful starting point having always dreamed of writing but not knowing where to start. Viglotti asks questions along the way allowing you to apply the content to your own work. Within the book, Viglotti uses examples of books to show where certain principles have been done well allowing you to research further and discover new authors. He also provides other useful resources on the art of writing.
This was a great little nugget of information and I highly recommend to any one thinking of writing a book. I will certainly be referring to it a lot.

For over 2000 years, dramatic writers have relied on Aristotelian principles to write their stories for the screen and stage. But now for the first time ever, these same timeless principles from Aristotle’s esteemed Poetics have been adapted for novelists.

With succinct clarity, novelist Douglas Vigliotti shows you exactly how to write a novel using tried-and-true principles that have been used since antiquity to tell great stories. These timeless principles are the foundation on which any story can be written. Whether you are writing your first or tenth novel, Aristotle for Novelists has something to offer any serious writer of fiction. It is both a challenge to writers to simplify their craft and a no-frills, impassioned outcry for novelists everywhere.

Anybody can be a writer. But not everybody can be a good or successful writer. And yes, personally I do think you have to be a reader to be a writer. How are you going to understand what your audience wants? Or have experience in different types of writing? Reading expands your vocabulary, it immerses you in different worlds, it educates you. Reading is such an important part of my life. Maybe one day I’ll have a go at writing like I’ve always dreamed.

Nowhere Man by Deborah Stone
Read Along: 13th Jan – 13th Feb

This is a really difficult one to choose and I think I am very split on what I think. There are definitely natural elements at play with some people. A person could be raised in a loving home and still end up doing horrible things. On the other side I can understand why a traumatic youth can lead to a troubled adulthood.

I did a lot of acting and performing when I was younger and was involved in amateur dramatics and the shows at school. I haven’t done anything in along time so I don’t know about these days but yes, I think I was pretty good at acting at a low level. I would love to get involved in something again once my kids are a bit older and I’m not so tired 😂

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. However, I truly believe that if it’s not helpful don’t share it because otherwise it’s just mean. I’m not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t need to know you don’t like me, just don’t engage with me. I used to try and please everyone and that is hard work and I’d worry about what people thought if I said something stupid or did something embarrassing but now, I don’t have time to worry about it. I have gone through matrescence and now I am discovering who I am as a 36 year old stressed out working mother trying to find myself amongst it all. 😂

Book Review - The Highlanderess: Enjas Quest

I CANNOT get enough of Eva Fellners character Enja! She is the most resilient and level headed leader I have read about. The story leads seamlessly from volume 1 into volume 2 and we discover more of Enjas journey from the Far East to Scotland. As in the first book, Fellner does a magnificent job of scene setting and immersing the reader into the environment.
Enjas quest delves right into the War of Scottish Independance and the devastation it brings. With female empowerment at the centre of this novel, Enja must defeat the odds and overcome the challenges rising from societal norms and male egos.
I flew through this book and will be impatiently waiting for volume 3.

As Enja’s Voyage turns into a Quest, the fate of Scotland hangs in the balance. With the Wars of Independence at a fever pitch, Enja faces new dangers, betrayals, and choices that will shape her destiny—and that of her homeland!

In this second thrilling installment of the five-part saga that has already captivated thousands, Eva Fellner continues her epic tale of a fearless woman who refuses to let anyone dictate her fate. Set against a backdrop of war and betrayal, Enja faces the most hostile environments with unwavering courage, determined to live freely and fight for what she believes in—no matter the cost.

If characters aren’t believable, it’s very hard to get behind them. The books that stick with me are ones where I could either relate to them or the characters have a lot of depth. It’s important if you want the reader to root for the protagonist and want to know more once the story ends.

Many times. As a parent now, I dread to think what I put my parents through. I wasn’t wild but I definitely took chances.

Book Review - Welcome to the Creative Club

What a book! I’ve always thought of myself as a creative person but after reading this book I realise that everyone is creative it’s just society and our own beliefs that curb the creativity. This book is packed full of journalling prompts and tasks, practical exercises such as breath work and affirmations and explorative tasks to push you to really think about what you want do. I loved how the chapters were interspersed with poetry and powerful quotes and questions. This will be a book i return to many times.

Book Review - Initiation of a Goddess

I really enjoyed this book and felt like it came at the perfect point in my life. Having had 2 children within the last 5 years I have put all of my energy into raising them and have not been focusing on myself. This book made me really look at how I was treating myself and bring some attention back to me. There are loads of really helpful journalling prompts and tasks such as meditations and affirmations which go alongside the authors own journey. I recommend this book to anyone looking to get their spark back and focus on themselves in order to live their authentic self.

Nowhere Man by Deborah Stone
Read Along: 13th Jan – 13th Feb

I have one friend who knows more than others. I trust her with my life and my children and she could probably access my social media and bank accounts if she tried 😂 But there is absolutely no doubt in the trust I have and I think that is the key. If there is the tiniest bit of doubt or anything that niggles in the back of your mind then be careful.
