Here's a fun one for us... What does this colour remind you of? 💙 For me, it's Beast from X-men!

Here are a few examples, good & bad, that I hear as a female painter in a male-dominated trade:

● "Aww, isn’t it nice to see a young girl doing a man’s job?" SOMETIMES it's patronising. I understand that it often comes from a nice place, but it's abit of a backhanded compliment.

● "Wow, he did a great job in here, do you like it?" SOMETIMES it's assumptive. I was wearing painters overalls, holding a roller & was still asked this as if I was the customer...

● "I'm so pleased you're here, I was very anxious until I saw you". SOMETIMES it's heartwarming. Vulnerable customers might feel anxious inviting male decorators into their home. I'm honoured to be a comforting face.

● "Are you dating the guy who hired you?" Now this one is disgusting & ridiculous! I am not even joking, I've been asked this... I am hired by clients and contractors because of my knowledge, skills & expertise, not my gender.

I'm here to transform your space, with professionalism, years of painting experience & a true passion for what I do, regardless of my gender!

Why hire me as your mural artist? 🤔 Well, I can give you 5 reasons from the top of my head... 😉

1. I've been perfecting my painting skills since college, that's 14 years of practise
2. I can tailor murals to accomodate your budget! I'm not here to rip you off, let's collaborate
3. I've got a 1st Class degree in Fine Art... I know what I am doing inside-out & I adore it
4. I had draw all designs to your specifications, capturing your vision on my iPad for preapproval
5. I am a friendly lass, I love to help others any way I can & I am very professional - this is my dream job and I'm going to make sure you get your dream mural!

Another week, another custom designed mural 🎨 This bespoke "menu" mural is right in the heart of Consett! ❤️ The Hub Consett is a fantastic venue that not only promote local artists in their shop but host events and community groups, as well as supporting local businesses and the neurodivergent community! 💖

So here's 4 things I wish I knew before starting my mural business, based on my experience so far:
1. Be selective with your portfolio offers- consider your physical portfolio, as well as benefits working with select clients such as referrals, social media presence and future collaborations
2. Actively network, record and follow up- think the long game and build relationships for the future (Shy Bairns Get Nowt)
3. Charge for your design time- pouring hours into designs and client ammendments is part of your services, so charge for it!
4. Family & friends are there to support you- ask for help 💕
