🕯️ WE’RE COMING INTO CANDLE SEASON!
With the cosy nights starting to creep in, it won’t be long before the candles are getting lit every evening! 🍂🤎
So I thought I’d share a few candle-burning tips — things I genuinely had no clue about until I started making candles myself!
There’s actually SO much more to making a candle than melting some wax, adding fragrance and popping in a wick. Every candle we make is tested, tested… and tested again! 🕯️
We test to make sure:
✨ The wick is the correct size
✨ The candle burns evenly without tunnelling
✨ The wax and fragrance work properly together
✨ The fragrance load is right
✨ The candle doesn’t burn too quickly or too slowly
✨ There’s no excessive smoking or sooting
✨ The melt pool develops safely and evenly
Even changing the fragrance can mean changing the wick, which is why every combination needs tested individually.
So, once you’ve got your lovely new candle home, here are a few things YOU can do to get the very best from it…
1️⃣ THE FIRST BURN IS SO IMPORTANT!
This is probably the biggest thing I never knew before making candles!
On your first burn, try to allow the melted wax pool to reach close to the edges of the container before extinguishing it. Candles tend to follow the burn pattern established early on, so if you only burn it for a short time, you can end up with that annoying tunnel down the middle and lots of unused wax around the sides.
Sometimes a little wax left at the edges can catch up on later burns, but giving your candle a good first burn really helps set it up for a lovely, even burn. 🕯️
2️⃣ TRIM YOUR WICK ✂️
Before each burn, trim your wick to around 5mm.
A wick that’s too long can create a larger flame, make your candle burn faster and can cause smoking or soot. Keeping it trimmed helps give you a cleaner, steadier burn.
3️⃣ DON’T BURN IT ALL NIGHT!
We know it’s tempting when the house smells amazing 😂 but candles shouldn’t be left burning for hours and hours.
Follow the burn-time guidance on your candle and never leave a burning candle unattended.
4️⃣ KEEP IT AWAY FROM DRAUGHTS
Windows, doors and even busy walkways can cause the flame to flicker or lean to one side. This can lead to an uneven burn and potentially more soot.
And finally… never leave a candle unattended, keep it away from children and pets and always place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface. 🤍
Making candles has definitely made me realise just how much goes into getting that little flame right! 🔥
