A recent Sherlock Holmes commission produced to a client’s own specification.

The collection combines several very different volumes, from full leather rebinds and a custom slipcase for a signed edition, through to bindings that recreate the appearance of the original books while incorporating leather spines and recessed Holmes medallions.

One of the aspects I enjoy most about commissions like this is working with a client’s ideas and finding practical ways to bring them together into a coherent collection. While the overall direction was established from the outset, there was still plenty of opportunity to develop the details and create something unique to their library.

A recent custom print and bind of a client’s Vampire: The Masquerade role playing game.

The client normally used the game on her phone during sessions, but wanted a large leather-bound edition that could sit open on the table while playing. The book was designed with three ribbon markers for navigation, along with a dark gothic aesthetic inspired by the game itself.

The leather was hand-dyed with deep red and black undertones, finished with a blind debossed central emblem and no external titling to keep the cover understated. Page edges were gold with a mottled, antique effect overlay.

A lovely project to work on, and even better to hear how pleased the client was when it arrived.

I’ve had this Pygmy Press from in the bindery for a few weeks now, and it’s been fantastic to use.

The workmanship is top drawer and it’s a pleasure to work with — everything feels solid, precise, and well thought through. It really does make the job that bit easier.

I continue to be impressed with the equipment James produces at Olive & Oak.
