Can you believe it's been two months!! I think that's the longest I've ever gone without doing an update. I wonder if you've all forgotten who I am! Oranges and greens seem to be the main theme, I hope you enjoy having a browse, please let me know what you think!

One of the survivors…

Wood firing has a way of keeping you humble. You can spend weeks making pots, load them carefully into the kiln, spend hours feeding the fire and then the kiln has the final say.

The results of my pieces were definitely varied. Some pieces were beautifully transformed by the ash and flame, while others were warped, covered in so much fly ash that I lost my surface decoration, or damaged when pots shifted in the kiln and stuck together.

I haven't shared any results before now because honestly, I'm still trying to get over the success rate of what I put it 😆

But this mug? A definite win. ❤️

The other side of the mug. The crow decoration has been blasted by the flame and ash and melted the birds leaving just the remnants and a thick, glassy glaze behind. It reminds me of the story of Icarus 🪽

The flashy bottom is rather wonderful, don't you think?

Tomorrow we are opening the kiln and so I'm looking back on photos from the massive task that was glazing, loading and firing the kiln Maddy Carragher with Westcountry Potters Assoc.

Dipping a mug in shino. My favourite group of glazes.

Very excited about this experiment. Charcoal surrounding cups in a saggar. The saggars are put right at the back of the kiln.

Unglazed pots. That big one at the back I'm most excited to see!

Loading up the last stack at the front. There are five stacks in total.

And here it is! All loaded up with 1500 pots? Not sure, we're going to count them all as they come out and see how many we managed to fit in.

Stoking through the top hole. This is VERY hot and you have to be very quick before the welder's mask begins to melt and gloves smoke.

Side stoking. The doors on the side of the kiln have to be opened up, wood put in and then closed again. The doors are so hot that some people wear two pairs of cotton gloves underneath leather welding gloves just to give enough time before the heat gets through.

And after five days of firing, 24 hrs a day, we are finished! Here I'm closing up the blow holes. The kiln will slowly cool down over two weeks, before we can open her.

The wonderful final day team at around 2am, completely exhausted and hot but happy. Firing during a heatwave pushed us all to our limits, but we got there.

have a confession to make. This mug didn't sell within the first hour of my last shop update and I was glad! So I changed the inventory to zero and kept it!



It has everything I could ask for in a piece - a rich golden glaze, an ancient flying pony and hearth ash speckles.



It's funny, when I first started pottery these weren't the colours I was drawn to, I experimented with a lot of blues and greens. While greens are still really important to me, blues have disappeared and it is the colours of sunrises and sunsets that are my favourite.

Combined with the smokey brown pony, I think the colours are a match made in heaven

There are so many stages to pottery after the piece has been thrown on the wheel, that's the quickest part. After throwing (or hand building) comes turning, decoration, drying, bisque firing, glazing, stoneware firing, photographing, uploading to the website. It's a lot and you've got to love it. Luckily I still do, it's been about eight years doing this full time and I still love it like I did back then.
