First bisque firing of the year βœ…οΈ

Yes, I know it's taken a while, but I have finally got there.

First Orkney Chair of the year is through the first firing too πŸ₯³ (this one is a commission).

A couple of plates didn't survive their first firing, but I have a few things to glaze now.

I spent yesterday afternoon in my pottery making more things while the kiln cooled down from 950⁰C. That is always a pleasure!

I am often asked if I keep any of my pottery for myself or if I sell it all.
I was reminded of this recently when I broke a jug at home and remembered that I had this one I made back in 2022.
I kept this one for us as I really like it, and it was the first jug with shells and 'tide line' that I made. It is slab built.
It is now in daily use 🐚

I made this pot a long time ago, shortly after getting my kiln. So that puts it early 2022.

I made it just to see how big a pot I could make in my small kiln. It is about 8 inches or 20cm high. It is a coil pot, and far from perfect, but I rather like it as it reminds me of a jester's hat. I never got round to glazing it until early this year!

I used Spectrum "Shallot" floating glaze on the outside, which gives it drippy or mottled sort of finish.

My new clocks, from my lovely but badly warped plates. Not much use as plates, but far too nice not to show off. 😊

Do you know why analogue clocks are usually pictured at 10.10 or 2.10 when they are for sale?
At those times they look like they are smiling, so they are more appealing, and so cheer up up - yes, really!

This is a gentle reminder to smile today, and make someone's day.

I realised that I have not shared this plate with you all.

I glazed it using a colour variation of the 'Frozen Pond' technique to create flowers, which you can kind of see, but I used a floating glaze over the Running Hot Chowder (also a floating glaze) so it didn't quite turn out as I'd hoped.

Also, you know I love strong colours, so it had to be red.

I am making another one, so fingers crossed.

We had a spectacular display of the Merrie Dancers (Northern Lights/ aurora) last night.

It must be time for me to do more aurora pottery.

I've been embracing imperfection today!

Here is the plate that split, now joined together again beautifully with gold lacquer, in the Japanese tradition of Kintsugi.

Love it.

What do you think, was it worth the effort?

Pottery keeps you humble 😁

I made this plate a long while back, and after it was glaze fired I didn't like the way the white glaze looked streaky. It is a "floating glaze" which tends to do its own thing if not used over texture.

I kept it until I had space to refire with another coat of the same glaze in the hope that I would like the results more.

Well, yes the glaze looks lovely now, but....
