Time to say goodbye to Lord Vulturemort! 🦅⛴️

Today I’m heading to the ferry terminal to hand over my African white-backed vulture sculpture for his journey to the Isle of Wight. He’s off to The Falconry Experience for the charity auction on Saturday 17th October, raising funds for VulPro and their work protecting Africa’s vultures.

I’ve loved creating this character, watching him take shape and seeing the grain come to life with the final coat of oil. I’ll miss having him in the workshop, but I’m proud that my work can help support such a worthwhile cause.

Here’s hoping he finds a wonderful new home and raises plenty for his living relatives! If you’re going along, keep an eye out for him—and please give this post a share to help spread the word.

Safe travels, Lord Vulturemort! 🖤

Two new barn owls getting ready for Pumpkins in the Park! 🦉🎃

Both carved by hand in beautiful yew, with its golden colours, flowing grain and natural quirks helping shape each bird’s character. One quietly perched, the other with wings lifted high, ready to take flight.

I’ve been enjoying a slightly freer carving style with these two—letting the wood and the carving marks play their part while keeping plenty of detail in the faces and feathers.

They’re freshly oiled and drying now. All being well, both will be available to buy at Pumpkins in the Park, Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley, this weekend, 17–18 October.

Come along, see them in person and catch me carving! If you’ve been thinking about a sculpture for your own garden, I’d love to chat about your ideas.

Which one’s your favourite—the perched owl or the spread wings? 🦉

A few more feathers, a little more character… my African white-backed vulture is nearly ready! 🪵🦅

Carved from yew, this sculpture has taken days of shaping and careful detailing. I’m letting the beautiful grain play its part, bringing warmth and life to the bird.

He’s being created for a charity auction supporting VulPro’s vulture conservation work. More auction details to follow!

Please like, share and follow Rusticmania by Roger Coolbear. Every share helps introduce my work to new people and supports me in creating more sculptures like this.

🪶 Art with a purpose—every feather counts.

Here’s a glimpse of my African white-backed vulture taking shape in yew, with each feather carefully sculpted by hand.

I’m creating this piece for the upcoming VULPRO charity auction at Isle of Wight Falconry’s Community Day, helping raise funds for vulture conservation.

It’s a chance to own a unique Rusticmania sculpture while supporting the remarkable birds that inspired it.

Please share this video to help spread the word—and keep watching for the finished sculpture and auction details! 🌿

Here’s a little snippet of the African white-backed vulture I’m carving from yew for VULPRO’s Community Day. 🪶

It’s still taking shape, but those layered wing feathers are beginning to come through. I won’t be there in person, but the finished sculpture will be auctioned on the day to raise money for VULPRO’s vulture conservation work.

If you’re going, please take a look at the carving and consider placing a bid. And if you can’t make it, sharing this post will help spread the word. Thank you!

Well… this is getting ridiculous. 🐴😂

After spending far too many hours refining Steel Water’s muzzle, nostrils and mouth today, I brought him indoors to dry out before oiling.

Only to realise that once he’s mounted in his final drinking position, hardly anyone is going to see half of it. 🤦‍♂️

Still, at least he can breathe properly.

He’s now taken up residence by the fire, much to Roxy’s apparent indifference.

Just a little more work on the eyes and ears, then onto his fabricated steel water plinth and finally some oil to bring that beautiful oak grain to life.

Nearly there… and yes, he is bloody heavy. 😂

🐴 Good to be back in the workshop and catching up with a few commissions.

Currently on the bench is my latest interpretation of Still Water — a horse lowering its head to drink.

I’ve explored this idea once before, carving the horse and water entirely from one solid piece of timber. I’ve included a photo of that original sculpture here too.

This time I’m taking a rather different approach. The horse is being carved from oak and will eventually be mounted over a specially fabricated steel plinth representing the water.

The steel will then be heat-tempered, bringing out beautiful blues, bronzes and golds, before being lacquered to preserve the finish. I think the contrast between the natural oak and coloured steel is going to work rather beautifully.

Still plenty of refining to do, but it’s always a lovely stage when the character starts to emerge from the wood. 🐴🌳
