Working back into this acrylic painting with charcoal.

At this stage I’m mainly looking at where I can add marks, sharpen up certain areas, lose some detail, and create a bit more contrast.

Figuring it out as I go.

I love the natural marks and unexpected textures that start to appear as the different materials meet and react with each other.

Working with a limited palette of charcoal and ink helps me concentrate on activating intensity and energy on canvas. Also the use of unconventional tools to produce marks helps.

For those of you who are always curious about how I build a painting—here’s a little look at what’s happening in the studio.

I’m working oil paint over an acrylic underpainting. The acrylic gives me a foundation to establish the shapes, values and overall direction, and then I come in with oil to develop the surface, colour and atmosphere.
