At the weekend I found a huge, fearsome-looking, prehistoric insect in my garden! A msg to a knowledgeable friend revealed it to be a fairly uncommon Stag Beetle. Google provided a link where I logged the sighting with People’s Trust for Endangered Species.

Apparently the UK’s Stag beetles are almost all found in suburban South/West London, Surrey and Hampshire, so that tracks. They are attracted to rotting wood, particularly oak, and we do have an ‘insect hotel’ of old logs and branches tucked away in a quiet shady area of our garden.

We’ve been receiving visits from this stunning woodpecker several times a day for the last two weeks but he’s quite shy so, until yesterday, we hadn’t been able to take any photos.

We absolutely love him and think he’s quite exotic lookimg in our English garden.

We’ve seen him fly off with food in his beak so are even hopeful there are baby woodies nearby!
