My work trip to the Fort Lauderdale area hasn’t just been in ice hockey stadiums though!

This week I’m keeping very cool in Florida! 🥶

As well as selling vintage Scandinavian lighting and homewares, I have a day job installing and maintaining the equipment used to broadcast sports events. Usually, that’s English Premier League football and I spent most of this summer working on the extensive ground improvements at AFC Bournemouth with the odd visit to Arsenal, Fulham, Chelsea and Brentford.

But this week it’s quite different, I’m working at the Florida Panthers ice hockey stadium in Sunrise, just outside of Fort Lauderdale in Florida USA!

It’s a bit of a learning curve for me as I’m working with some robotic camera equipment I’ve not used before, and I’ve not worked in an indoor stadium either, let alone for ice hockey. But it’s very interesting and enjoyable - that’s us just under the ‘B’ in pic 2!

Weather-wise it’s strange as my other half informs me it’s a wonderful 25c and sunny in Reigate UK, but I’ve gone to Florida, world famous for its amazing climate and, not only am I working in a giant freezer compartment, but when I do step outside it’s storms and torrential rain! So I have yet to use the outdoor pool at my hotel, but I am determined I will do.

Shoutout to the team at UK tech co MRMC, whose robotic camera arms I’m working with - would you believe these guys made the tech used to film all those iconic corridor scenes in the Apple TV series Severance?!

I’m currently working in Bournemouth, one of many working hard in very hot weather to get AFC Bournemouth’s ground ready for the new Premier League season.

With me being further West than at home, it meant I could get a better view of this evening’s partial eclipse.

At the weekend I found a huge, fearsome-looking, prehistoric insect in my garden! A msg to a knowledgeable friend revealed it to be a fairly uncommon Stag Beetle. Google provided a link where I logged the sighting with People’s Trust for Endangered Species.

Apparently the UK’s Stag beetles are almost all found in suburban South/West London, Surrey and Hampshire, so that tracks. They are attracted to rotting wood, particularly oak, and we do have an ‘insect hotel’ of old logs and branches tucked away in a quiet shady area of our garden.

We’ve been receiving visits from this stunning woodpecker several times a day for the last two weeks but he’s quite shy so, until yesterday, we hadn’t been able to take any photos.

We absolutely love him and think he’s quite exotic lookimg in our English garden.

We’ve seen him fly off with food in his beak so are even hopeful there are baby woodies nearby!
