I haven’t been able to update much recently; it has been a busy old time! I’ve been experimenting with 3D printing, renovating the kitchen, been on holiday with the family, harvested thousands of walnuts and started making Christmas(!) decorations…
Tomorrow I start a new job in a totally new industry, so posts may be even fewer and farther between. Nevertheless, Elm Tree Workshop will continue and I will post as often as I can.

Now available - bespoke, personalised signage 🤩

Here are just a couple of samples of what is possible. The first is a house name plaque, the second a celebration gift.

Both designed and custom-made from scratch.

It’s finally here! The heirloom hatchet restoration for is finished šŸ˜Ž I will always see flaws in my work, but as a first effort I am pretty pleased with this. For posterity, here’s a (probably incomplete) breakdown of what I did…

Removed the head, de-rusted, cold blued, sharpened and oiled and polished. Designed a new handle from English walnut; cut, shaped, sanded and attached using brass and blue resin fibre wedges. Hole for wrist loop drilled and lined with brass. Wrist loop tied with dual slip knots, brass weight and stoppers added to prevent the knots coming open. Hand-cut and stitched leather sheath with custom patches, hidden popper fastening and waterproofing spray coating.

I’m 95% sure nothing (bar the lace for the wrist loop) is ā€œoff-the-shelfā€. Even the brass bits have had some form of customisation.

The axe restoration is complete! This isn’t quite the post I was hoping to make today, but I am still working on the beauty shots as existing photos really don’t do this justice. Hopefully I’ll have the full post ready soon šŸ¤ž

More experimenting with the laser cutter today; a teeny tiny box for my daughter. The wood has only had a quick sand at 240 and no finish, but again I’m quite pleased with the result šŸ™‚

A made a few little keepsakes for a birthday party - thing is, I made everything from raw materials 😮 The wood was cut and engraved from 300x300 sheets, the loops were cut and forms from 300x0.5mm steel rods and the wire was braided and soldered into heavy-gauge loops.

Will, one of my best and oldest friends, sadly passed away recently after a heroic battle with pulmonary fibrosis. I could write stories about Will and the shenanigans we got up to all day, but for now I’ll just get to the point. If you are able to, please consider donating to the attached fundraiser in his memory. https://www.givewheel.com/fundraising/9959/fundraiser-in-memory-of-will-cowling/

Quick update on the hatchet restoration for
Head separated from original handle and rust removed. Cold blue solution applied to prevent future corrosion. New handle cut, shaped, sanded and dry-fitted.
Only bits left to do are a final buff and finish before attaching the head (a possibly building a solid walnut case for it…)

New tool day!
I found a couple of bargains on FB marketplace this week. The first is a laser cutter/engraver, the other is a metal lathe 🤩 I’ll now be able to not only create my own metal hardware, but etch them with my makers mark!
The lathe will take a fair bit of cleaning up having been stored in a barn for years, and the laser will require some tuning, but overall a couple of very satisfying purchases!

A couple of works in progress… one is a utility knife, the other a marking knife on one end and a scribe on the other - thanks for the inspiration
Both came from a single old file which I popped in the forge to soften before shaping. They’re almost ready to go in the tempering oven to be hardened back up again 😬 They’ll then have some lovely wooden handles added before finishing.
Depending how they turn out, I might sell them as a pair … or keep them for myself šŸ˜‚
