Did you know that the gritstone cliffs at Burbage Rocks are littered with massive, abandoned millstones? Hundreds of years ago, stonemasons carved them straight out of the bedrock. If a mason hit a weak line and the stone cracked, it was left behind as a permanent part of the landscape. If you wonder through the bracken, you'll see them.

As a ceramisict, I do feel a connection to that process. Working with earth means negotiating with the material—learning its limits, embracing its rugged textures, and knowing that every piece carries the story of the hands that shaped it.

This butter dish brings that connection to life. I’ve glazed the silhouettes of Burbage’s rock faces right onto the clay but left the rest of the surface raw and partially unglazed. Holding it in your hands feels just like touching the gritstone edges themselves—a functional piece of art that bridges the ancient, rugged landscape with your daily table ritual.

This particular dish is available at Michael Claxton gallery & studio, Abbey Lane. Sheffield
