Chester, Chester.

When i was a boy, we had a phase of supporting my local team coz they were winning against the big clubs in the old League Cup. (ask your grandad). so we all used to waive our 'silk' scarves around and shout 'CHESTER, CHESTER'... Chester FC nickname was / is The Seals. i think because the old ground was on 'Sealand Road'..?? i stopped supporting them after a while and went back to my old favourite club. The fickle nature of football supporting..

i like how digital work allows you to be silly and throwaway occasionally.

Tree Chelsea Park Sheffield.

took a walk recently and was minded to draw this, lovely tree in the afternoon sun. just pen and ink in the notebook. Found it to be a particular calming moment with the shadows on the tree and the ground being just so.

Digital painting 2026

Some images just refuse to be fixed or solved or even work. I worked on this image for months, trying to make a companion picture to an image i made back in December that was inspired by ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. (Third image if you swipe on). This new image was going to be inspired by ‘Penny Lane’, and try as i might i couldn’t get the elements to work. (Swipe second image for an early attempt). I had the pretty nurse, and i had the poppies, but somehow, it all didn’t hang together. And sometimes you have to just let it go. I decided to include an intimation of a theatrical curtain (The nurse feels as if she is in a play, but she is anyway).. and that was more or less that.

Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane were the first two songs recorded in what became the ‘Sgt Pepper’ sessions, but they didn’t make the final LP. Shame. ‘When I’m 64’ did, and as i am 64 in December, i decided to include those lyrics instead. Though i am going to have to continue to feed myself…

‘Learning to Talk’. - Black bird in a sycamore.

Painted last summer, but not shown until now. It is not a ‘Blackbird’ in the strictest sense, as there are elements of the Mynah bird in it’s plumage. My Nan had a Mynah bird. It swore like a trouper.
