I've never been able to settle on one particular thing, so my creative projects show a range of ideas and media! The media I use most are; watercolour paint, watercolour markers, pigment marker, Promarkers, inks and pencils. I try to share my creative process and any hints/tips you might find useful

They’re growing all the time! This sketchbook page full of mushrooms is a throwback to early 2021. I’d rediscovered this book during lockdown and decided to run with it, filling it with drawings. I always think that I don’t do many themed pages of similar sketches but this 5-year old spread disproves that! Going back through the sketchbook makes me simultaneously happy and sad: happy at the lost drawings I’d forgotten I’d drawn but sad because I don’t feel as prolific as this nowadays… 🤷‍♂️

Winding Forest Path… Just above Meirion Mill and Pony Minllyn in Wales, there’s a small path up through the trees that leads to an old mine. I sketched this part of the path as it disappeared through the trees and round a bend. I just wanted a simple tonal sketch, nothing too fussy and used a sepia watercolour stick to draw it. Maybe I was thinking of the Lord of the Rings, one of the paths that the fellowship or Frodo and Sam might have taken…?

Sketchbook ink drawings! A little throwback showing what I was drawing in Winter 2020! So basically flower sketches, created with the Pentel pocketbrush ink pen and maybe a little watercolour too. I remember experimenting with laying the colour over my pencil sketch and adding the ink on last. The Rhododendron was more an exercise in careful control of the lines!

Quartz stone drawing! This sketch of a piece of quartz was tricky - I forgot most of my pens AGAIN 🙄 and it had a really strong contrast. I solved the colour issue by falling back on my highlighter pens but the contrast was more difficult. Originally, I did the darker strip across the middle with black ink from a Pentel brushpen but it was too solid and dark. Smudged white POSCA was my last resort, to soften the deep black area and even though it worked, it’s too light now 😂. The life of an artist, eh?
Never mind, it’s a sketchbook piece so I’m not getting too fussy; I learned from it and now I move on!

A sketchbook page throwback! I love it when a sketchbook page is filled with little drawings, sketches and ideas. Too often my pages are polished and filled with ‘finished,’ artwork and that’s why I like this one! It has colour tests for succulent paintings, tulips in acrylics, the TRON typeface and some cool graffiti studies. I think I need to do more like this and then I choose an A5 sketchbook as my new one 😂🙄

Drawing some quartz! Doing some sketchbook drawings of rocks I found on the beach in Cornwall. I thought I’d sketch this one using just acrylic paint pens, from the set I’ve been gifted. The colours are so bright, it’s a bit difficult to get darker colour using just the pens but I like how bright and colourful it looks - quite different to the normal work I draw, so that’s a good thing!! The next one is going to look totally different…

Shropshire Warriors foam hands! I wanted to make some props to support my wife’s basketball team so stencilled onto these blue foam hands! We get to a couple of games each year and never have anything to wave and support. They have an existing logo so I just drew it out with some minor tweaks, cut it and sponged it out; old-school style 😆 SWIPE for process pics!
Back in the 90s, I used to make a few T-shirts using stencils and fabric paint in spray bottles and I forgot just how much fun it was! This was using Daler Rowney acrylic paints and a sponge.

The Ghoul Gate! The fun thing about finishing a sketchbook is going back to the start to see all your old drawings. This ink drawing is from circa 2011/12, inspired by the Ghoul Gate chapter of The Graveyard Book, by the now problematic Neil Gaiman 🙄 I wanted to do the whole thing using my newly acquired Pentel Brushpen and I learned so much doing it - about composition, outline and texture!
Drawing things based on a description from a book is a great exercise if you’re suffering a bit of creative block…

Truly Eggcellent 😆 Some sketchy ideas to help my daughter think about filling space with her design drawings. She was thinking of a T-shirt or bag design and not using the square space as well as she could, so I sketched a quick idea to help solve the problem. Then, I got gifted some acrylic paint pens, so thought I’d try them out on this cereal box sketch!

A Portrait in acrylic? A couple of years ago I was asked if I’d paint a portrait for a friend. If you follow me, you know that portrait painting is not my thing but a deal was struck! This commission took me the best part of a year to complete but before you judge me 😆 it was difficult and I suffered with a lot of doubt and uncertainty, leading to extreme procrastination! Portraits aren’t like flowers or landscapes, a likeness is required and this was really difficult for me.
Anyhow, I decided to try a blue ground (for the first time 🙄) and set to work using a grid to get it accurate enough. So after many hours painting, repainting and adjusting I was able to hand it over to its new owner. It was a huge and humbling learning curve and there’s still things I would do differently if I had to do it again but overall I was pleased with how it went.
