Gee Massam Art Drawings, paintings & Illustrations by Shrewsbury based artist, Gareth Massam.

**COMMISSIONS** open.

I'm inspired by nature, landscapes and pop culture to create realistic and imaginary illustrations. I've never been able to settle on one particular thing, so my creative projects show a range of ideas and media! The media I use most are; watercolour paint, watercolour markers, pigment marker, Promarkers, inks and pencils. I try to share my creative process and any hints/tips you might find useful

through my channel tutorial videos. I hope you check it out if you like what you see in my posts...

Page of Influences! I couldn’t draw this week so here’s a sketchbook page I recently completed. If you’re sharp -eyed you’ll see I date stamped this one March 2021 but the S wasn’t finished! All the drawings on here are studies of influences, stuff I really liked and wanted to work out how they did it. The graffiti S by thealphachild and the awesome R by Kaser Styles plus metallic sketches of Colossus by Eddie Nunez and birds wing by Darren McAlvert. The idea being that next time I’d do graffs or metal I remember what they did and bolt that onto my usual style. It might sound like AI but I’m doing the manual work, improving my skills, not just asking a computer to do it for me!
The metal studies influenced by recent purple armour drawing, for sure.

Purple Armour! I wanted to sketch while waiting for my daughter at drama club but I forgot my art things!! A quick check of the car and we found some old crayola felt tips and her mini sketchbook with dotted paper. So I drew this piece of armour, using some grey and purple felt-tip pens while I waited. I don’t know if it was the dotty paper or cheap pens but I approached this quite loosely, building up from grey to dark purple - and it was fun to do!
I added a little POSCA white highlights when I got home 😄

Beautiful blue curves! Drawn 5 years ago and painted just this week, the wonderful, ‘Blue Loop,’ sculpture by Merete Rasmussen! These wonderful sculptures were on display in back in 2019 and I loved their big, blue interweaving shapes. I knew I wanted to sketch them, I just didn’t know it would take this long 😆 I used a single brushpen to paint all the tones on this; a lovely ultramarine (with a little sepia for the shadows…😉)

Big Blue Letter S! Finished this sketch of a piece by after years! From now on, I’m just gonna draw the style of a letter instead of the whole piece - I was becoming a slave to copying the whole piece. There’s usually one letter that really grabs me the most in a piece and that’ll be my focus in the future. Don’t get me wrong, each piece is always fantastic 😄 but I want to pick a fave letter and let that influence me!
I’m about 1/3 through this sketchbook, hoping I haven’t left too many unfinished drawings in it 🥴😂

Sunrise with graffiti! I drew this study in my sketchbook about 5/6 years ago but never got round to painting it. I loved the way the landscape flowed across the lettering in the background. After finishing it I wanted to credit the artist called Neville_Bartos_ but couldn’t find them on IG anymore. Whilst googling the name, I discovered it’s actually the name of a character in a 2000’s movie called, ‘Chopper.’
It’s painted with Ecoline Brushpens, Pentel brushpen and white ink pen and if you swipe, it shows you the order I painted it in 👍

Herbal Watercolour! When you’re sketching, your inspiration can come from strange places. Take this herbal tea from Aldi (Lidl?) for example; I loved the shapes, colours and strong contrast so wanted to do a sketch of it. I drew it out in 2020, then life moved on and it got forgotten about! So in trying to COMPLETE this sketchbook before I start another, I had to finish it using something I didn’t have at the time, the Ecoline Brushpens. It was a lot of fun to do those colours so bright and to finally finish it!
Black ink from Pentel pocketbrush.

Heavy Metal Armour! The sketchbook is nearly finished so now I’m going back through it, finishing all the drawings I left behind…
A chunky metal gauntlet from gets sketched with marker and fineliner, with a base of GREY HIGHLIGHTER!? I didn’t even know they made a grey highlighter!! 😆

Throwback Star Wars drawings! I don’t often draw Star Wars stuff but it appears that when I do, it’s likely to be a stormtroopers helmet!! So this May the 4th, here is a small collection of the fanart I’ve done over the years, either drawings for other people or just sketchbook fun.
These sketches are done using a range of alcohol markers and ink pens, either on watercolour paper or Bristol board.

The Helmet is forged! Yet again, a simple prop for school turns into a craft project that takes way too much of my time! To be fair, making this Spartan helmet for ‘Greek Day’ was pretty smooth from start to finish (I wish all projects were like that!) and I am now the biggest fan of the humble glue gun. Making this prop with PVA would have taken sooo much longer. It’s all cardboard, glue and acrylic paint with some red paint for the Mohawk. Plus the kids loved it 😄👍
Shout out to the YouTube channels of and for some design ideas and inspiration 🙌

Cherry Bakewell sketch!! A quick sketch of a sweet cherry Bakewell to go with the cookie drawing from last week! I’ve got two targets for my next sketchbook - more themed pages and more Ecoline Brushpens! I’m just undecided between A4 and A5 right now…. and regular paper or watercolour paper… 😄🙄
