Our Story - Penguin & Chicken Designs came together as a result of the UK Coronavirus lock down this year. Kaz started making loads of bottle bags, tote bags and facemasks for friends, neighbours and family both here and back in New Zealand. It was a great way to stay connected and share a l
ittle love and kindness. One of our neighbours, a girl called Lena, would run up and down the street in her rainbow outfit during the lock down Thursday night claps, bringing lots of joy and happiness to our street. When Lena was due to go back to school her Mum and Dad wanted to find a facemask that she’d like, one that would fit her well and that she’d feel happy to wear, so we offered to make her one. When Lena came over to collect her facemask she saw Penguin & Chicken sitting on the sofa and instantly loved them. We soon arranged for them to go to Lena’s place for ‘socially distanced’ sleepovers. This led to us thinking perhaps we could call our new company ‘Penguin & Chicken’
Penguin originally came from Philip Island in Australia. Over 300 little penguins are oiled every year, from waste in the sea. Jumpers, like the one penguin is wearing, are knitted by caring people around the world to help save oiled penguins. For us Penguin represents looking after our environment and minimising single use items, like disposable facemasks, that have appeared recently on our beaches, in our streets and across the New Forest. Chicken knows that the global Covid pandemic has created a lot of fear and anxiety for so many people. Chicken reminds us that it’s okay to talk about how we are feeling and we don’t need to hide feeling scared or a bit ‘chicken’ because that’s pretty normal. Chicken also wants to help make sure that we all look after and stay kind to each other. One of the things we most enjoyed during lock down is getting to know the people in our local community better, helping each other out and caring about those that live close by. Penguin & Chicken are all about connecting with people, especially those in our community, to help bring joy and a sense of fun.
