What happens when you stop designing your home for other people?

When a home is only built to impress, it stops feeling like yours. The colours play it safe. It looks lovely in photos but can feel like no one really lives there.

The homes I love most say something about the people in them.

The art you couldn’t leave behind. The colour everyone told you was too much. The reading corner that only makes sense to you.

This isn’t self-indulgent, it’s the whole point.

Your home should hold your story, not someone else’s idea of what makes a good one.

So before you ask whether something impresses, ask whether it feels like you. Because that’s where it all starts.

Save this if you needed the reminder. And when you’re ready for a home that actually feels like yours, the link to book a consultation is in my bio.

Your office is the first thing a potential client notices before you’ve even said a word.

For this executive recruitment team in Tunbridge Wells, the original space was functional but it all felt rather forgettable.

We redesigned it from the ground up introducing jewel tones, a smarter layout, intelligent furniture in two distinct rooms with two completely different moods.

Swipe through to see the five decisions that made it work. ➡️

💾 Save this if you’re thinking about your own workspace.

✨️ House Tour✨️ Step inside and take a tour of this traditional Kentish Oast House.

An oast house that could have gone quaint but instead we went bold.

With it’s original beams and quirky shapes the architecture was already interesting. So we leaned into the industrial bones with steel framed windows and exposed brick and then layered in warmth, colour and personality on top.

The brief: A proper family home, one that feels alive, not like a heritage museum.

Every room was designed around how this family actually lives not preserved in a past that can’t be enjoyed.

The result is a home full of character, full of colour, and genuinely comfortable to be in every single day.

Full project is linked in bio — take a proper look.

A beautiful barn comes with beautiful challenges.

Long, narrow with high ceilings and a layout that wasn’t working for the way our client actually lived.

Planning permission for an extension had been refused, so instead of going out, we went deeper.

A full reconfiguration of the space from one end to the other. Dining moved next to the kitchen. A properly relaxed seating zone anchored by the fire. And a purpose-built home workspace where the dining table used to double as a desk.

The colour palette took its cues from the building itself. Terracotta, soft pink and teal, woven through natural materials: wood, wicker, leather. Warm whites to reflect light. Heavier tones lower down to stop those glorious beams from feeling remote.

Every furniture decision was made with flow in mind. Curved, rounded pieces. Nothing too large. Nothing that interrupts the eye.

This is holistic design in reality, making beautiful spaces work at every level. Spatial planning, furniture selection, colour, lighting, soft furnishings. Each phase considered in relation to the whole.

If you want to create a space that sets your home apart from everyone else’s, bring colour in to your home.

Colour is the thing that most people want but feel the least confident about. I hear it all the time...

“I love colour but I’m scared I’ll get it wrong”

“What if I commit to something and regret it?”

“I just don’t know where to start”

In this carousel I’ve shared five colour pairings built around blue that I love to use in family homes. And that’s because I know these work in real homes. I’m not basing this on trend reports or Pinterest mood boards but families that have taken the plunge with me because they love living with colour in their homes.

If you’ve been sitting on renovation decisions because you’re not sure which colours will work for you then this is your sign to have that conversation.

As I write this to you I am about to go on an extended summer break. Yes, I am taking a sabbatical, before returning to all things Smartstyle Interiors this autumn.

At Smartstyle we are passionate about Holistic Interior Design, an approach to interior design that supports the wellness of the mind, body, and soul. This is a multidisciplinary interior design field since it combines biophilic design, colour psychology, human biology, and ergonomics, among others. The goal of holistic interior design is to design spaces that look good, feel good and actually promote your physical, mental, and spiritual health. Simply put it is about creating spaces that make you happy.

I am taking this holistic approach to my own wellbeing, and my focus this summer during my time off is to fill my cup with things that bring me joy. I will be visiting exhibitions in London (Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear at the V&A is high on my list), reading books, listening to music, and getting my fill of art and culture.

What can you do this summer to fill your cup? What will make you happy?
