Off again tomorrow, this time to Birmingham, Alabama 🇺🇸 for the grand opening of SILVER & CEREMONY FROM SOUTHERN ASIA 1830–1930 at the Birmingham Museum of Art!

This exhibition showcases the extraordinary Harish K. Patel Collection, a collection I was proud to help assemble and co-curate.

A journey of highly skilled silversmiths and with the influence of British colonialism in southern Asia, produced works of outstanding artistry, creations that continue to amaze, just as they did centuries ago.

This exhibition features over 150 pieces of silver, original design drawings, and other decorative arts.

I was recently honoured with an invitation to an exclusive evening hosted by Bonhams in partnership with The Office of Tibet. The occasion centred on a lecture and reception titled ‘The Divination, Search & Installation of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’, held at Bonhams, New Bond Street, on Monday 2nd June.

Guests were treated to a compelling lecture delivered by Alexander Norman, acclaimed biographer and author of The Dalai Lama: An Extraordinary Life. His insights provided a deeper understanding of the remarkable and little-known process behind the recognition and enthronement of the young Tenzin Gyatso as the 14th Dalai Lama.

Adding to the significance of the evening was a preview of a group of rare paintings by Kanwal Krishna, which form part of the forthcoming auction The Collection and Archive of Sir Basil Gould CBE. These evocative works capture key moments and rituals associated with the Dalai Lama’s discovery and early life, offering both artistic and historical value.

The event offered a rare and moving convergence of history, art, and diplomacy, shedding new light on one of the 20th century’s most significant spiritual transitions. For me, it was not only an honour to attend but a reminder of the vital role cultural institutions can play in preserving stories that might otherwise fade from view. Through Alexander Norman’s lecture, Kanwal Krishna’s paintings, and the legacy of Sir Basil Gould, guests were afforded a deeply human glimpse into Tibet’s past, a moment in time when faith, politics, and identity intertwined. It is a history that still resonates today, and one that continues to inform our understanding of Tibet’s place in the modern world.

Antique 19th Century Exceptional Burmese, (Myanmar) solid silver thabeik bowl, repousse’ decorated in high relief depicting different traditional scenes from the Burmese mythology, showing detailed figures set against a chiseled matted background. The top chased with scrolling bands and base decorated with a band of betel leaves. The quality of the bowl is outstanding, heavy gauge and very crisp. The bowl is typically Burmese from the region of Myanmar, acid tested shows a 900+ standard, dates to the 1880’s.

Antique early 19th-century Swiss music s***f box, crafted in 18-carat gold and exquisitely decorated with multi-coloured enamels. Of elegant rectangular form, the case features engine-turned detailing throughout, with the top surface later embellished with old cut diamonds spelling the name “Belle”. This sits against a richly enameled dark blue ground, framed by a taille d’épargne border of tulips and plumes on a vibrant cornflower blue opaque enamel.

The exterior is adorned with a lavish polychrome palette of enamel — deep and light blues, reds, greens, oranges, and whites — all intricately bordered with chased gold foliate motifs. Each side is centered with navette-shaped dark blue enamel medallions, enhancing the symmetry and elegance of the design.

A discreet sliding switch at the reverse activates the concealed musical movement. Lifting the lid reveals a pierced rose gold grille, meticulously engraved with a trophy of love, birds, and floral roundels of vine leaves, concealing a s***f compartment beneath. The key-wound mechanism, accessible via a keyhole at the base, plays for approximately 3.5 minutes when fully wound in an anti-clockwise direction. A masterpiece of Swiss horological and decorative arts, this piece not only embodies technical innovation but also the romantic and artistic sensibilities of its time. Hallmarked maker’s mark SD in a horizontal lozenge (Sené & Detalla, Geneva), unofficial PC3 18ct standard mark, and later control marks.
