If your kitchen becomes the go-to gathering spot in winter, a few simple tweaks can make it feel warm and inviting without any big changes. Try softening the lighting by using warm bulbs or adding a small lamp on the counter. It takes the space from bright and functional to calm and cosy in seconds.

Seasonal scents make a big impact too. A simmer pot with orange and cinnamon, a clove candle or a pine diffuser can set the mood before guests even step inside.

If you have the space, add a couple of seating spots so people can perch with a drink while you cook. It keeps the flow relaxed and makes everyone feel included.

Textiles are your friend in a kitchen. A runner, seat pads, tea towels in richer tones or a little rug instantly warm up the room. Bring in some winter foliage for texture and life, and set up a small drinks or snack station so guests can help themselves without crowding the worktops.

And of course, candlelight. It softens everything, adds atmosphere and makes even a busy kitchen feel inviting.

Send us a message and we’ll help you create a space that feels warm, welcoming and ready for hosting.

There are so many assumptions about what interior designers actually do, so this post clears up what we are not. We’re not Pinterest board makers who swoop in with pretty images and call it a day. We’re not yes-people who agree to every idea. We’re not seasoned discount hunters with secret codes for every shop, and we definitely can’t redesign a whole space without measurements or a quick chat about how you actually use the room.

We’re also not magicians who can “just quickly mock it up,” create ten versions of the same layout in an hour, pull every item from thin air or guess your perfect shade of “beige but not too beige.” We’re not time-benders who can turn a full renovation around in two weeks, and we’re not budget-whisperers who can make bespoke prices magically match flat-pack.

What designers really do is much more meaningful. We listen. We problem-solve. We plan layouts that fit your lifestyle, choose materials that make sense long-term, create spaces that feel balanced and help you avoid costly mistakes. The work is thoughtful, collaborative and built on experience, not shortcuts.

If you’re curious what the design process actually looks like, let’s chat 💬

Before you start choosing colours or furniture, these questions are the backbone of a successful design. They help you get clear on what you actually need instead of jumping straight into buying things that might not work.

Understanding the purpose of the room guides every decision, and knowing how you want it to feel shapes the mood and materials. Practical needs keep the space functional for real life, not just the Pinterest version.

Natural light is a big one too because it affects colour, layout and atmosphere far more than people realise.

And being honest about budget and timeline stops the process feeling overwhelming and helps you prioritise the things that matter most.

Once you have these answers, the whole design becomes easier, calmer and more cost-effective.

Your hallway is the first impression of your home, yet it’s usually the most overlooked space. With a bit of intention, it can go from a corridor you rush through to an area that feels welcoming, organised and full of personality.
Lighting is one of the quickest ways to change the mood. Soft, warm lighting instantly makes the space feel calmer and more inviting compared to the harsh overheads most hallways rely on. Mirrors are brilliant in narrow or dark spaces because they bounce light around and make the area feel bigger than it is.
If clutter tends to gather by the door, a small console or wall-mounted shelf gives keys, post, and bags a proper home. It keeps your entryway tidy and stops the stress of hunting around for things every time you leave the house.

Colour and art can also transform the feel of the space. Even one bold print or a painted accent brings character in straight away and makes the hallway feel connected to the rest of your home instead of an afterthought. And don’t forget scent. It sounds small, but a subtle diffuser or candle can make walking in the door feel instantly comforting.

The hallway might be small, but it has huge potential when it’s designed with purpose.

5 Ways to Make Your Home Feel Cosy This Winter ❄️✨

As the days become shorter and the evenings settle in earlier, this is the time of year when home starts to feel like a little sanctuary. A place to slow down, warm up and enjoy the simple comfort of being indoors.

Start by inviting in soft textures. Wool, linen and boucle instantly make any room feel snug and calming. Let the lighting follow the same mood by choosing gentle, warm glows that wrap the space in softness. Natural materials such as wood or stone can ground the room and add a sense of depth that feels effortless.

The way you style your space can shift the feeling too. Cushions, throws and rugs layered naturally create that inviting, lived in comfort without feeling cluttered. And finally, bring in scent. A candle or diffuser with something warm and familiar can completely transform the atmosphere.

These small details are what make a home feel welcoming and calm as winter settles in.

Save this for your next cosy reset or send us a message if you would like help creating that winter warmth throughout your home.

Welcome to our interior design Room 101, where we banish the design habits that quietly throw a space off. And more importantly, how to fix them so your home feels calmer, warmer and more considered:

🚫 Glossy paint that shows every brush mark
It reflects every flaw.
Fix: Choose an eggshell or matte finish for a smoother, softer look.

🚫 Harsh white lighting
It makes everything feel flat and a bit clinical.
Fix: Choose warm bulbs and mix in table or floor lamps for softer layers.

🚫 Curtains that don’t touch the floor
They make the room feel shorter and unfinished.
Fix: Go full length for a more elegant feel.

🚫 Fake plants that look fake
They distract more than they help.
Fix: Choose high quality faux or go for real greenery that’s easy to care for.

🚫 Overly matched furniture sets
It can make a room feel like a showroom rather than a home.
Fix: Mix tones, shapes and materials so the space feels collected rather than bought in one go.

🚫 Rugs that are too small
They break up the room and make it feel cramped.
Fix: Pick a rug that lets at least the front legs of your furniture sit on it.

🚫 Relying on one lonely ceiling light
It leaves shadows and no atmosphere.
Fix: Add lamps, wall lights or even candles to spread light around the room.

🚫 Too many visible cords
They make everything look messy.
Fix: Use trunking, clips, cable boxes or hide them behind furniture where you can.

Design is all about balance, texture, and personality - not perfection. The magic happens when a space feels lived-in, layered, and effortlessly you.

What are you adding to Room 101?

Want your home to feel more ‘designed’ without a full makeover? It’s often the small details that make the biggest difference. Here are a few easy swaps we love that instantly lift a space and make it feel more high-end:

✅Go for refillable soap bottles
Swap supermarket plastic for glass, ceramic or amber bottles - giving your space that “boutique hotel” finish.

✅Refresh handles and k***s
Hardware is like jewellery for your furniture. Try brushed brass, matte black or stone - they can completely change the mood of a room.

✅Upgrade your light switches
We notice these more than we think. Choose brushed-metal, black, or brass plates for a subtle, elevated touch.

✅Layer in natural textures
A sculptural vase with branches, linen cushions, a boucle throw — mixing tactile materials makes your home feel calm and considered.

✅Check your lighting temperatures
Mix warm and neutral bulbs rather than bright white - it makes everything look softer (and far more expensive).

How to Build a Home You’ll Love (Without Rushing It)

Save this for later - because good design takes time.

1️⃣ Start with a plan.
Don’t buy a single thing until you know how you want each room to feel. Mood boards, Pinterest boards, or a quick chat with a designer (👋🏼) will save you time, money, and a lot of mistakes.

2️⃣ Invest with intention.
You don’t need to splurge on everything. Choose key pieces — like a great sofa, lighting, or built-ins — that set the tone and last for years.

3️⃣ Declutter before you decorate.
The biggest transformation often starts with clearing out what doesn’t serve you. Space = calm.

4️⃣ Style seasonally, not impulsively.
Swap cushions, greenery, or scents every few months instead of constantly starting over. It keeps things feeling fresh without the overwhelm.

Give yourself six months - a few small, thoughtful changes each month add up to a home you truly love living in.

How to Add Personality (Without the Clutter)

Your home should feel like you, but it doesn’t need to be filled to the brim to tell your story. The key is balance. Think layers, texture, and intention rather than excess.
Start by surrounding yourself with pieces that mean something. A vase from your travels, art that makes you smile, or something that’s been lovingly passed down. These are what bring warmth and authenticity, not more “stuff.”

Play with texture and tone - mix linen with stone or wood to add richness and depth without creating visual noise. Let your favourite pieces breathe. Negative space is just as powerful as dĂŠcor when it comes to creating calm, thoughtful design.

And when it comes to colour, be intentional. A single bold artwork, a patterned cushion, or painted joinery can speak volumes on their own.

When every element serves a purpose, your home feels personal, not cluttered.
