When such examples of eighteenth-century Indian brass military figures were displayed at the Paris International Exhibition in 1878, Sir George Birdwood, keeper of the Indian Museum at South Kensington (now part of the Victoria and Albert Museum) claimed that the craftsman appeared to have been inspired by Gustave Doré’s illustration of Don Quixote. He also went on to praise the modelling and felt that ‘they graphically illustrate the whole gamut of military swagger in man and beast’.

These figures were originally part of a large set reportedly belonging to Timma Razu, Raja of Peddapuram (d.1796). They were said to have been commissioned on the advice of his astrologers to enable the Raja to review his troops daily without the need of bloodshed. Another version is that the figures were made on advice of his astrologers for presentation to Brahmins in order to avert his threatened death.

Opening today at the Hayward Gallery Hayward Gallery , Indelible Black Marks by Singh Kulpreet alongside Anish Kapoor.

Kulpreet’s reaction with my faux pas of clashing with the hosts outfit, is he wishes everybody had worn black for the exhibition, a humble and beautiful artist. His work comments on the lasting scars that climate change, agricultural pressures, and human activity leave on both the land and communities are powerful and moving.

Congrats

A bumper day filming for at Valentines House and Gardens in Ilford, London. To be shown on One this Autumn, I filmed an Indian trunk with links to the Holkar dynasty of Indore, some Indian jewellery, a social history piece talking about the 1972 Asian expulsion of Uganda, an important album of Indian photography and a mystery object game with Fiona Bruce (before today it’s 2-0 to me)!

The public were wonderful, the humans and dogs. My fellow experts inspiring as always and the BBC staff ever helpful and considerate.

All in all, a great day, look forward to seeing it on the tele later this year!

I’ve had a few clients visit by appointment recently and it’s been really nice to see old friends and new and show off a few items that have recently come in and I’ve pulled out of storage (we are currently in between premises - watch this space).

A few things to remember:

1) I might now own a contemporary art gallery but my passion for antiques hasn’t wavered.

2) Clients are welcome to visit or contact me to see stock that is not on the website.

3) I’m still shipping worldwide (hence the crate)!
