15 years ago today I got married to my best friend and I officially became a Marsden. I genuinely don’t know how it’s been 15 years. In my head, we are still in our 20s and definitely not old enough to have been married this long.

Since then, we’ve started multiply careers (more for Hubby), had our three amazing boys and built this busy, slightly chaotic life together including my business.

He’s also spent over 17 years listening to me talk about fonts, colours and random ideas at the worst possible times. All the times I’ve asked, “Can you just look at this?” after staring at a design for so long that I can’t tell if it’s good anymore.

Three boys and a lot of chaos later, here we are.

Happy 15th wedding anniversary to us. I’m still very glad I became a Marsden.

I've mentioned that I've been working on something new behind the scenes this summer, so I thought I'd give you a little bit more of an idea about where it came from.

Over the years I've worked with lots of small businesses and one thing I've noticed is that the need for design doesn't suddenly stop when you've got your branding sorted. If anything, that's when the list starts getting longer.

There's always another leaflet that needs updating, a promotion that needs graphics, something for an event, a document that needs making look more professional or an idea you've had that you just haven't had time to do anything with yet.

And when you're already doing all the other jobs that come with running a business, sitting down and designing something yourself usually ends up at the bottom of the list.

I started thinking about how useful it would be to have a designer who already knew your business. Someone who understood your branding, knew how things should look and who you could simply send those jobs to when they came up.

Basically someone you could message and say, “Abi, can you sort this?” And that's where the idea for what I've been working on started.

Jumping on the kinda chic trend but making it very Abi.

Because yes, I'm a graphic designer and I absolutely love what I do but there's a lot more to me than what you see behind Marsden Makes Co.

I'm a mum of three boys, wife for 15 year, happiest outside, always up for an adventure, partial to a coffee, still learning new things and definitely not very good at taking myself too seriously.

There's a lot of life happening around the designing and that's exactly how I like it.

There's been something happening behind the scenes at Marsden Makes Co this summer that I haven't really talked about yet.

It's actually something I've been thinking about for quite a while, mainly because of conversations I've had with other small business owners and the things I see people struggling to keep on top of when they're running a business.

Sometimes you don't need a huge design project. You don't need to completely change your branding or start something massive. Sometimes you just need someone to take care of the design jobs that keep appearing on your list while you're busy doing everything else.

So I've been working on a new way that I can help with exactly that. I'm keeping the rest to myself for a little bit longer, because where would the fun be in telling you everything now? But I'll be sharing much more over the next couple of weeks.

Something new is coming to Marsden Makes Co this September and I'm really excited to finally start talking about it.

A little behind the scenes of running a business during the summer holidays…

Managed to squeeze in some work on a very exciting secret project before swapping the desk for playing on the beach with my boys.

It’s a constant juggle, the to-do list is never actually done and somebody always needs a snack but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A little question for all you business owners…

Do you ever wish you could hand over the graphics side of your business to someone else?

The social posts, flyers, price lists and all those fiddly little jobs that somehow take up half your day or most of the evening.

Not something churned out by AI. Actual design created by a real person who gets to know you and your business.

This is me and I’m absolutely chuffed with myself!!

We got up early, pulled on our walking boots and headed for Catbells with the plan of getting up there before it got busy. We actually got to the top before 7:30am!

There was something so lovely about being out that early with the boys. It was quite-ish, the views were incredible and we just walked, chatted, laughed, stopped when we needed to and kept going. Honestly I felt amazing. I sat there looking around thinking, we’ve just done that.

I think as a mum you spend so much time being proud of your kids. Watching them do things, encouraging them when they’re struggling and telling them they can keep going. But we forget to do it for ourselves so that morning I was proud of me.

I spend a lot of time on here sharing Marsden Makes Co from the designs, the projects to the business and everything I’m working on but that’s only one part of me.

This is me too. Messy hair. Sweaty. Walking boots on. Three boys somewhere nearby loving life. Doing something that made me feel happy, strong and actually really proud of myself.

Im going to share more of these bits because everything doesn’t have to be a business lesson and sometime you just need to see the real person behind it all.

Can I have a tiny graphic designer rant for a minute?

Why are ALL event posters starting to look the same?! The same AI-style people, the same look and then approximately 847 bits of information squeezed into every available gap. I’m sorry but my brain has already switched off. I don’t know where to look, I don’t know what I’m meant to read first and I STILL don’t know if the event is actually for me.

Your event poster doesn’t need to tell me absolutely everything you’ve ever known about the event. It needs to stop me scrolling, tell me what it is, who it’s for and why I should care. Then give me somewhere to find out more. Simple. Clear. Actually designed with the person looking at it in mind.

So if you’ve got an event coming up and don’t fancy blending into the AI poster crowd, come and have a chat with me. Let’s make something people actually want to stop and look at… rather than scroll past because their brain can’t cope with another wall of text.

I genuinely thought everything had to be perfect before I could move forward.

The perfect idea. The perfect plan. The perfect time. I just needed to feel a little bit more ready… and THEN I’d do it!

Spoiler alert: that magical moment where everything suddenly feels sorted never actually arrives.

It took a lot of encouragement from the brilliant women in The EstablisHer Circle for me to realise that sometimes you just have to start. Marsden Makes Co. has grown, changed and evolved because I’ve grown, changed and evolved too. My branding wasn’t a reward I gave myself when I’d finally “made it”. It’s been part of the journey, helping me show up, find my confidence and work out where I want this business to go next.
