Typically we see 1 generation of Elephant Hawk months per year.
Mine emerged in April and May, promptly laid me a lot of eggs which in the warm weather had grew in to nice big caterpillars and started pupating 3 or 4 weeks ago... I didnt expect to see them until next spring... but here we are, the exceptionally warm weather we have has starred to bring them out!

The species that started it all!
The Elephant Hawk Moth.
A couple of years ago my neighbour came knocking on my door holding this huge brown monster of a caterpillar he'd found walking along the grass in his garden. I was in awe! A quick check online (i think we used Seek actually) and found it was an Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar. We moved it into my greenhouse and gave it lots of willowherb, and a short while later it pupated and emerged the following spring as a beautiful perfect Elephant Hawk Moth.
This one single caterpillar had made me fall in love with moths.
They have to be my absolute favourite of our native moths, I love them as caterpillars and I love them as moths and this year I have the absolute pleasure of raising around 100 caterpillars!

Would you like me to bring back some natural history collections? I havent made up any of these little collections in quite some time.

Ive currently got this bug themed one available, but if there's interest I should be able to pull together some bone ones or some mixed ones... let me know!

Once again the local verges are being cut back to nothing... and once again ive managed to rescue a ton a peacock butter...

Once again the local verges are being cut back to nothing... and once again ive managed to rescue a ton a peacock butterfly caterpillars, and a couple of tortoiseshell butterfly caterpillars too. Unfortunately I was too late to one of the verges and it looks like it was cut a week or so earlier this year, unfortunately there was hundreds of caterpillars there last year so I can only speculate that it would have been the same again this year.
Many of our beautiful native butterflies and moths and currently busy laying eggs and caterpillars are busy hatching, eating anf trying to survive - the chosen host plants for many of these are the "weeds" that grow along our verges and hedgerows - nettles, thistles, willowherb, ragwort, bramble. You wonder why you see less and less of them, its because people keep removing their essential plants during their primary breeding, laying and caterpillar season!
Caterpillars dont just eat any old leaves, they all have specific plants they eat, you take that away and they can not survive.

So many bees... it takes me less than 5 mins to walk from my house to the bus stop.
