Juanita Bellavance Art Your FREE digital notecard download here: https://bellavanceart.com/ I am now exhilarated through the blending of color and shape.

Formerly a music teacher of elementary age children, I was exhilarated through the blending of sound and movement. It thrilled me to see how joyous students were about their skills as well as how their parents were over the moon with their performances. I feel the same exultant experience when people are captivated by my art as when they responded to my music. I find myself painting impressions of

nature’s nuance and sometimes abstract emotions. Away from my art, I embrace Pilates, a practice that keeps me balanced and gracefully
moving forward. Join me in this journey of creativity and well-being.

The result is decided before you ever see it.
In Pilates, if the warmup is skipped or rushed, the body compensates.
You feel it later — in the instability, in the lack of control.

Painting works the same way.
What looks effortless at the endis built on layers that weren’t.

The preparation.The missteps.The quiet corrections.

That’s where strength comes from. That’s where clarity comes from.

The result isn’t separate from the warmup. It’s a reflection of it.

Pilates taught me that strength comes from restraint — not force.

That lesson lives in every quiet space I leave on the canvas.

One thing I enjoy on the reformer at Pilates is that experience of rhythmic flow. It seems to call my attention to a sense of calm.

With this artwork, Measured Silence, there was a similar sense of rhythmic flow while working. In that flow state the art comes together with more ease than usual.

We often say art is life. The correlation of Pilates with art is natural as for me Pilates has also become life.

Encouragement can be subtle—and that’s often when it’s most powerful. In my Pilates practice, I’m drawn to voices that support without pushing, and that’s something I consistently notice with .alo. Her presence feels steady, grounded, and quietly motivating.

That same feeling shaped Sustaining Quiet. Early mornings—before momentum kicks in—when movement is slow, breath leads, and the day hasn’t asked anything of you yet. Pilates teaches me that these moments prepare the body for strength, not by force, but by attention.

This misty tulip garden close-up holds that same idea: softness over structure. If you’ve ever experienced that calm-before-the-work feeling, you know exactly what I mean.

One of the hardest parts of practice isn’t the big movement — it’s the hold. Staying in one controlled position takes more strength than expected. Constantly making tiny adjustments while holding looks effortless but definitely is not.

It’s the same with painting.

This painting was built layer by layer, choice by choice. Serenity on the surface, but supported by structure, tension, and intention underneath.

In between Pilates classes, it’s just me and the mat in my living room, negotiating with my core. Bridge is one of my favorite moves. A little trickier with my feet on the bal for sure.

I notice how fast my brain wants to quit right before my body actually has to. Staying in it — even when it’s messy — feels like the real work. Strength for me is less about looking good and more about not giving up.

Practicing balance here shows up everywhere else too.

I actually enjoy leaning forward from the springboard like this at Pilates. It’s comforting to know how secure it feels.

Then we start the work.

Ok. There is often that split second where quitting early is tempting. : )

Staying with it is the hardest part. But what I’m getting from it is strength, steadiness and the ability to stay present through discomfort. I feel like the ability to stay present through discomfort is just as valuable a benefit as building strength and balance.

One thing I’ve noticed as my form improves at Pilates is how much more endurance it provides. When everything is organized — core, shoulders, hip line — I can stay in an exercise longer. Form affects balance so as it improves, standing work on the reformer is becoming easier.

It’s less about strength and more about form when it comes to balance it seems.

This painting is my visual response to that same idea — staying within one structure/form and letting variation happen inside it.

One thing I really appreciate about the way shares simple demos with clear focus is how doable it feels. The more natural exercises are much easier to bring Pilates into my life on days I don’t go to Pilates class.

The idea of natural movement at home vs more involved ones at class is similar to the way I think about this piece, Timelessness. Organic marsh growth often exists alongside more controlled spaces. To me this feels similar to how we can maintain consistency simply on days we don’t go to the more controlled environment of Pilates class.

If you follow Tina or practice this way too, you know exactly what I mean.
