Zhang Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers (2004) turns a tale of love, loyalty and betrayal into a spectacle of color and movement. Set during the final years of the Tang Dynasty, the film follows a secret rebel organization and a dangerous journey where almost nothing,including love, is quite what it seems.

From the famous bamboo forest sequence to its extraordinary use of costume, landscape and choreography, every frame feels meticulously composed. A wuxia film where action becomes dance and nature becomes part of the emotion.

FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE - CHEN KAIGE, 1993

A film so beautiful and so politically charged that it was banned in China shortly after its release.

Spanning more than fifty years of Chinese history, Farewell My Concubine follows two Peking Opera performers whose lives become inseparable from the roles they play. Behind the elaborate costumes and painted faces is a story of desire, obsession, betrayal and identity, unfolding through war, revolution and the Cultural Revolution.

When the film premiered in China in 1993, it was pulled from cinemas and banned. Its portrayal of homosexuality, su***de and the violence of the Cultural Revolution was considered too sensitive. After international pressure, it was eventually allowed back into Chinese cinemas, but in a censored version, with scenes cut and its ending altered.

That same year, Farewell My Concubine became the first Chinese film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes, sharing the prize with Jane Campion’s The Piano. More than three decades later, Cannes brought it back in 2026 in a fully restored 4K version.

Sergei Parajanov composed The Color of Pomegranates less like a conventional film and more like a sequence of living paintings.

Bodies, objects, textiles, architecture and color replace traditional storytelling. Each frame is carefully arranged, filled with symbols and ritual, images that don’t simply illustrate the story, but become the story themselves.

Made in 1969 and inspired by the life and poetry of Armenian poet Sayat-Nova, the film remains one of cinema’s most visually extraordinary works.

A FOGGY TALE (2025)

Set in 1950s Taiwan during the White Terror, A Foggy Tale follows a young girl who travels alone to Taipei to recover the body of her brother, executed by the government. Along the way, an unlikely friendship with a discharged soldier turns her journey into something tender, strange and deeply human.

Directed by Chen Yu-hsun, the film moves between historical tragedy, quiet humor and warmth rather than treating its painful subject as a conventional political drama.

The film became one of Taiwan’s most celebrated recent releases, winning Best Narrative Feature, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup & Costume Design and the Audience Choice Award at the 2025 Golden Horse Awards.

A story about grief, survival and unexpected kindness - unfolding inside one of Taiwan’s darkest historical periods.
