Aegina Retreats by The Cool Projects

Aegina Retreats by The Cool Projects Creative retreats, art workshops and residencies on the island of Aegina. Aegina Retreats was created by the The Cool Projects.

A space for painting, ceramics, movement and exploration through nature, materials and the creative process.
Once we were a workshop producing locally handmade olive oil soap bars, bodycare products, objects for the home & bath. We were the perfect place where you could learn about the traditional methods of olive oil soap making and try our rich variety of soaps.

We also created a Cool Collection of objects made by us and some collaborators. Today we are a colour & clay studio offering a series of workshops & retreats in painting & ceramics. Our mains objective: make you discover another angle to the creative process, that will unblock you from the insecurities of creating, using colour or clay. At the same time we offer you a little peak into life on an island, whether in the summer, spring, autumn or winter -all seasons are good for Aegina. And you can stay at our guest house, the Grapevine House, while you are here. When we are not running our workshops-retreats, we are in the studio, making stuff: Yanis amidst colours, pigments, inks, brushes, spatulas, papers, canvases, metals, woods... the list is long. marina surrounds herself with studio and wild clays and materials picked up from her walks with Yanis and their dog: stones, pebbles, leaves, distorted plastic bottle... the list is indeed endless. We exhibit when we can, together and separately, and we sell some of what we create through our site as well as in our space in Aegina. last but not least, we organise events in collaborations wiht artists from Greece amnd beyond. Stay tuned, become part of our community. And yes, we have remained true to our commitment to a green life where we recycle and upcycle as much as we can.

At the port and nearby: the sounds, the light, the colours, the sea, the sky, the mountains across

Coming to follow one of our retreats is about diving into the creative process. It is also about discovering a little of the island, opening your senses to as many aspects of it as you can. Leaving the studio, taking some distance from what you are making, come back to it with a different mindset, maybe a new outlook... feeds the creative process.

We need the winter to pause a little, absorb what happened in the past workshops and retreats, in the activities of the year. Time to prepare for the coming season, to be in the studio, explore and dive back into our own practice. Enjoy the quieter pace of the island, the different light. Take time to look out onto the horizon, ponder, think, feel, be in silence.

Another reason to come to Aegina in September is the retreat - workshop Listening Waters: Fluid Creativity, Presence & Embodiment, from the 19th to the 26th. Rani Khanna & Yanis Zagorianakos will join their experiences in this unique combined approach to creativity, to being, to (re)discovering.

It is not about learning. It is not about performing nor about becoming.
It is about listening, softening and remembering.

Water, here again, is our guide. It is not simply to be observed, but to be listened to.
How is creativity moved when it is not forced, when we do not try to control it? You might find some answers and you will certainly find even more questions.

Next stage of plates with flower imprints. Now they need to dry, some colour may be added and they will be glazed and then fired.

marina is playing around with flower imprints on plates. Ideas for a new series of plates, which might develop into a new series.
You can make things like these in our Exploring Ceramics Creative Workshop & Retreat. Just check our dates in link in bio and choose the ones for you.

Come dive in Colour and Movement, in Painting and Butoh
with Yanis Zagorianakos & Aliki Germanou

Let water be your teacher for this week. Let water guide your movements, your senses, your imagination, your creativity.
Let movement be your guide for this week. Let movement follow water, shape your thoughts, your senses, your perception.
Give colour space, allow to be part of the living process of your creativity, of your everyday choices in painting and in movement.

More information in the link in bio, or simply message us. We would love to go on this journey with you.

Everything takes time in the ceramics process. And comes the moment when the piece you are working on has found its identity. Not because it is a masterpiece... these are more than rare. But because it has reached its limits... for the time being, with our eyes of the moments. Not always easy to know when this moment has arrived, although sometimes it is crystal clear.

The process is what is most enjoyable and satisfying. When the finished pieces reflects this fully - well that might just be a short moment of bliss.

Details in a white theme.

So much lies in the details. It takes practice to learn to see them, appreciate them, bring them into our everyday life, our everyday practice in the studio. Then at some point we start seeing them all the time, or almost. We start seeing things we never gave much importance to. We see beauty. Outdoors in nature, and indoors. In our gestures, in our sounds. A flower, a shadow, a colour, a corner, a composition, a shape, the taste of coffee.

When we see the details and give them space, time starts to stretch. Moments take a different dimension, a different meaning. And yet so much remains a mystery

Thursday is kiln day for our ceramics workshops - it is all up to the kiln devils and angels, and a bit of luck now.
We spent the last few days exploring clay and the creative process, in the studio and outside of the studio. We explored areas where clay comes from. We brought nature in the studio and allowed our creative nature to find a channel of expression. We tried wild and studio clays. We played, laughed, ate, talked, learned, pinched, slab built, burnished and polished, walked and ate some more. We waited for the right level of humidity in order to move to the next stage, and are waiting some more, for the water totally vanish from our clay creations.

We will open the kiln Saturday morning, curious to see the surprises it will offer us.

Concentration in the studio. The light. The silence. The sounds. The practice. The patience. The explorations. The failures. The surprises. The exchange. The process.
