I’ve been writing a lot about listening, accents, and why English feels harder than it should.

But I also know that understanding is only one part of the story.
Speaking is the real challenge.

KAPU is a small, guided space for people who understand English
but freeze when it’s time to speak.

If you’re curious, you can step through the gate here:

Cooking videos can do more for your English than you think.

Especially when you stop focusing on understanding everything
and start noticing how English sounds.

I’ve just shared a small listening experiment with Jamie Oliver:
British pronunciation, aubergine vs eggplant,
and why it’s completely normal if your ear needs time.

👉 Read the article and tell me:
What was the last word or sound that confused you in English?

(and why Jamie Oliver Sounds Different) I’m always amazed by how much a single cooking video can improve your English, without feeling like studying at all. Have you ever tried learning not only how to cook, but also how to listen from Jamie Oliver?....

Many people say this after watching a Jamie Oliver video:
“I understand him. My English is good.”

And then they start cooking…

This article is about that moment
when you realise that understanding the words
is not the same as understanding what to do in the kitchen.

👉 Why just watching Jamie Oliver doesn’t always mean real understanding?

We all eat.
We all go to restaurants.
And when we travel, food is often one of the strongest experiences.

Yet many people notice something strange:
even if their English is good, talking about food is surprisingly hard.

I wrote a short article about why this happens, and why it’s not about level, but about language we almost never learn.

👉 Why Food Is Hard to Talk About in English (Even If Your English Is Good)

(Even If Your English Is Good) We all go to restaurants. And when we travel, local food is often one of the most important parts of the experience, if not the most important one. Yet many people notice something strange: even if they speak English w....

I remember the first time I wanted to explain a cooking video to my friends… and I realised I didn’t have the words.
Not because my English was “bad”, but because food needs a different kind of language.

Lately I keep seeing the expressions English for Chefs and Culinary English used as if they meant the same thing.

But they don’t.

One is mainly about working in a professional kitchen.
The other is about understanding, experiencing and enjoying food more deeply.

I wrote a short reflection about this difference here:

Why Are These Two Expressions Often Confused? “I want to understand better what my favourite chef says in their latest cooking video.” Starting from this thought, many of us - myself included - search for English for Chefs. We want to understand the....
