Carlow Little Theatre Society

Carlow Little Theatre Society Carlow's multi-award winning drama group set up in 1944, we first performed in May 1945. Celebrating 80 years of drama in 2025.

Carlow Little Theatre Society is one of the oldest amateur drama groups in Ireland. At 8pm, on Monday 11th December 1944, a group of like minded people got together at Carlow Town Hall to discuss forming a local drama group and thus Carlow Little Theatre Society was born. On 23rd May 1945 we produced our first play โ€˜The Whip Hand' and since then, we have on average, performed a One Act season and

a full length production each year. We welcome all aspiring or established actors and writers wishing to try out new material, as well as anyone with a desire to work with us behind the scenes (Directing, lighting, production, costuming, etc) from aged 16+. To become involved, simply follow our social media updates and then come along to one of our readings or social nights. Alternatively, please feel free to email or PM us. Regards,

The Committee,
Carlow Little Theatre Society.

The final cast member in our production of John B. Keaneโ€™s Big Maggie is Maggie Polpin, played by Audrey Cooper.

Maggie Polpin is the formidable heart of the play. Newly widowed, she seizes control of her shop, her family and her own future with a force that unsettles everyone around her. Sharp-tongued, practical and fiercely independent, Maggie refuses to be ruled by grief, convention or the expectations placed on women of her time. Her treatment of her children can be harsh, even cruel, but behind her iron will lies a woman shaped by years of sacrifice, disappointment and survival. Maggie is a complex protagonist: powerful, difficult, unsentimental and unforgettable.

Audrey first stepped onto the stage with Carlow Little Theatre in 2009 in a one-act play Sorry, Wrong Number directed by theatre stalwart Anne Gleeson, and has never looked back. Some of her most notable roles over the past 17 years include Diana - Lend Me A Tenor 2010, Cassie - Rumours 2016, Mrs Kilbride - By The Bog Of Cats 2017 and most recently, Belinda - Noises Off 2025.

Audrey has also enjoyed Musical Theatre roles with local theatre company Striking Productions where she embodied the evil roles of Wicked Stepmother - Cinderella, Queen Grimelda - Snow White, Maleficent - Sleeping Beauty, Mother Superior - Sister Act, amongst others. Assisting with costumes and props along the way, audrey believes that local community theatre is the heartbeat of Carlow and wishes to thank Carlow Little Theatre Society, director Marc Grogan and all her fellow cast and crew for a memorable run. She would also like to extend her thanks to her family, particularly her eldest son Scott, whom she has had the privileged opportunity to share the stage with in Big Maggie.

The next cast member from our production of John B. Keaneโ€™s dark and powerful play Big Maggie, is Mick Polpin, who played by Scott Cooper.

Mick Polpin is one of Maggie Polpinโ€™s sons, a young man growing up in a house ruled by his motherโ€™s fierce will and hard sense of survival. Like the other Polpin children, Mick is caught between family duty and the desire for a life of his own. His presence helps reveal the cost of Maggieโ€™s control within the home: her strength may protect the family business and name, but it also leaves little room for warmth, freedom, or tenderness. Through Mick, Big Maggie shows how the next generation struggles under the weight of a parent determined to shape every future but her own.

This is Scottโ€™s 5th full length production with CLTS, having previously taken part in productions such as Sive as Liam Scuab, 2022โ€™s Juno and the Paycock as Johnny Boyle, 2023โ€™s The Cripple of Inishmaan as Cripple Billy and most recently Da as Young Charlie, which he fondly remembers as his favourite play.

Earlier this year, he was a part of Bunclody / Kilmyshallโ€™s festival circuit production of Da which took part in the All Ireland finals in Athlone.

Big Maggie brings a special occasion for him as heโ€™s delighted to be acting along side his mother Audrey, as mother and son both on stage and off! Scott would like to thank fellow cast members for the hard work put into this year's production.

Big Maggie by John B. Keane is directed by Marc Grogan and presented by arrangement with the Drama League of Ireland (DLI).

The next character from our production of John B. Keaneโ€™s dark and powerful play Big Maggie, is the Priest, who played by Harry Shorthose.

The Priest appears at the funeral of Walter Polpin at the beginning of Big Maggie, helping to establish the world of mourning, ritual and public respectability from which the drama emerges. His presence reflects the importance of religion and community observance in rural Ireland, where death, family reputation and social duty are closely bound together. Although his appearance is brief, he helps frame the opening atmosphere of the play, marking the passing of the old order before Maggie Polpin begins to assert her own authority over the family, the shop and the future.

Harry is no stranger to Carlow Little Theatre audiences. He made his debut in 2022 when he played Neuro in the One-Act play, A Little Box Of Oblivion, directed by Michael Somers. He later appeared as a British Army officer in Somersโ€™ adaptation of The Steward Of Christendom the following autumn, making his full length debut. In 2023 he returned for Normal Schnormal, playing Dr Wilson. He then took the lead as Detective Justin Case in the societyโ€™s Murder Mystery to great reception. He also helped out with The Odd Couple and performed in First Light at Carlow Arts Festival. He played the Chief Policeman in Gaslight later that year, and is delighted to be involved in back-to-back productions for the first time. He also serves as journaller and photographer for this production.

Big Maggie by John B. Keane is directed by Marc Grogan and presented by arrangement with the Drama League of Ireland (DLI).
