As summer draws to a close, which artwork captures the season best for you?

From sunlit gardens and ripening fruit to sparkling coastlines and golden landscapes, artists have celebrated the fleeting beauty of summer for centuries.

We've chosen John Singer Sargent's Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885–86), now in the Tate collection. Painted outdoors over two summers, Sargent captured the magical moment when daylight fades and paper lanterns begin to glow among the flowers.

It's a painting that seems to hold summer in a single, fleeting moment — just before the light disappears.
