I’m doing something super exclusive this November, and I’ve wanted to do it for years.

Before I choose a paint colour, four things come first.
None of them is the colour.❣️

1️⃣Which way the room faces.
North light is cool and steady all day.
South light moves and warms.
You're not choosing a colour, you're choosing a colour for a light.

2️⃣What's already in there and isn't moving.
The floor. The wood. The stone. The black window frames.
A colour never gets chosen on its own.
It gets chosen against everything it has to sit beside for the next ten years.

3️⃣What the room is for, and when you're in it.
A room you use at eight in the morning wants something different from a room you use at nine at night.

4️⃣What you reach for when nobody's watching.
Your wardrobe. Your books. The mug you pull out of a cupboard full of mugs.
You've been telling yourself what you love for years.
You've never been given permission to put it on a wall.

➡️And then the fifth thing, which is the one that actually decides it:
what that colour does to you.
Not whether it's fashionable.
What it does to your shoulders when you walk into the room.
