I picked up this tiny twig with leaves three weeks ago… may be even four. I picked it up thinking these are colours l haven’t captured yet and the leaves had dried and curled in the sun like a dance. The form was just so gorgeous to me.
It sat there on my desk for weeks on end as I couldn’t find the right mix for these unique earthy colours. I couldn’t get over the form and the lovely way the leaves curled like that, but doubted my abilities to get a close match of colour in paint .
Like they say, some things call to be captured in paint, I feel like this dried bunch of leaves was amongst them. As my collection of other fresh flowers, fresh leaves and other bits and bobs grew, it sat there patiently waiting its turn. Soon after l dedicated enough time to prepare a mix that l felt was close enough to mimic it, the leaves came apart from the twig and fell apart from its dance.

Baby blush is the word that comes to mind when l look at this pink pastel carnation.
If I would have never tried matching this colour, I would have never known this is something l could mix with watercolours. I still wonder if l could mix it without Buff titanium. I had been eyeing Buff titanium for the longest time but l couldn’t be happier that l got myself a tube. It’s my “go-to” colour for all pastel shades.

Fallen leaves… l don’t know the origins but couldn’t ignore the warmth these colours bring my heart. There is enough beauty in the natural unvarnished world that’s just waiting on us to take notice. I’m glad l paused enough to pick these up.

Celosia Rocket.
Mixing blush coral colours can be quite confusing for me. I found myself always admiring but never reaching out for the celosia rocket from the bouquet because l didn’t exactly know how I’d mix the colour. But then time, time passed and it looked like if l didn’t paint it soon enough it was slowly going to change colour and wither away. How could l let such a pretty colour go.
I rolled up my sleeves (literally) and pulled out a couple of scrap papers and gave it a go. Got it wrong several times, not soft enough, not subtle enough, too yellow, too orange… my brain was panicking as the plant looked like it was wilting right before my eyes. l mixed and swatched various proportions of the reds and yellows and got it wrong each time.
Then my “oh so trusted” opera pink came to the rescue, she was soft and just as intense as l wanted her to be and mixed it with a little Lemon Yellow Hue after trying several other cool and warm yellows. This gloriously radiant peachy coral colour emerged.

Fallen leaves. Picked up for the hues, mesmerised by the forms.
Never before have l paid close attention to the twisted forms dried leaves take when they are exposed to sunlight and air. Nowadays , l pick them up on my walks, handle them with care, bring them back to my desk, place them on watercolour paper and always end up going “wow”.
Made me realise anything removed from the noise and clutter surrounding it, placed simply against a white background, viewed in isolation can be a thing of beauty. Of the many things that l gain from this exercise, paying attention to the previously invisible world around me is probably my favourite.

Cape Plumbago.
From a distance these flowers look white while it’s still in a bunch. On closer inspection it has delicate blue-grey colours that perhaps can only be captured in watercolours.
Just like with watercolours, you need very little pigment and oodles of water, these flowers look like they have been washed out in the rain. Ironically, it caught my attention on a dull rainy day too as white standing out in contrast against a sea of green. How amazed l was to see the grey on a closer look.

Alternanthera. Joyweed. Joseph’s Coat .

A quick google search says, all of the above are common names for plants in the genus Alternanthera. I’m going to go with Joseph’s coat for this one. I like how it sounds. I would like to remember that.
It’s amazing what one can find on a walk in the forest. I found this on a walk, there was this shining glistening plant among all the green that it was surrounded by. Im not sure if you can tell from this picture, but the under side of this leaf had the most gorgeous shimmer even on a dull rainy day. I put in some iridescent paint just to capture the shine l could see with naked eye.
Different values of Piemontite Genuine (DS) was the colour that came very very close to the Joseph’s coat, but l could see more colours than just that in real. ☺️

Alternanthera _ commonly known as Joyweed or Creeping Chaffweed.
These days l walk around with the keenest curiosity, everything catches my eye….Weeds, twigs, trees and spots of sharp intense colour amidst the green in this beautiful Bangalore weather.
I’m always on the lookout for colours in nature that blend and merge and shine. Colours that look like they were just meant to be together and colours that pop against each other.
