Yesterday was National Doctor’s Day in India—observed every year on July 1st, in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, a legendary physician, freedom fighter, and one of the earliest advocates of accessible healthcare in India.
This year’s theme, “Healing the Healers: Who Looks After Them?”, comes as a reminder that behind the white coats are human hearts that carry the weight of care, courage, and quiet sacrifice.
In that spirit, I created this piece, “Healing Heroes”—as a gift for a dear friend who has recently completed his studies and will soon enter the medical field as a doctor. I’ve witnessed his dedication, his tireless hard work, and the deep sense of purpose.
To all the doctors who walk this path with compassion and resilience—thank you. For your quiet strength, for the sleepless nights, for choosing to show up even when it's hard. This one is to celebrate you!
This automaton is designed as a fridge magnet that comes alive with the gentle turn of a crank. As it moves, the paper elements rise in an alternating, deliberate rhythm—evoking the endless persistence and grace with which doctors tend to their patients. Each motion is intentional, each element part of a visual metaphor for a doctor’s care, resilience, and dedication.
