Picture stories for your eye from Meghalaya 🙂‍↕️

These images are captured from homes and workshops of Eri Silk weavers and cultivators. Eri Silk is a unique silk, which is Majorly found in the North East region.

They are too precious to be kept only in my gallery. Planning to make some detailed posts about my travel to the north east of India and talk more about this silk that can keep you warm in winters and cool in summers 😍

Credit where credit is due!
Our rich heritage and artistic creativity needs to be on the world stage.. but we also wish it to be in the right way, giving credit to the hundreds of men and women artisans who for generations have given everything for this art is the most basic that PRADA could do?

The More I travel rural India, it just keeps confirming my belief that crafts are woven into the fabric of this land. The Government, having recognised the potential of Indian Crafts in this country, have selected a few villages where a substantial number of craftspeople reside and can be easily connected to some tourist circuit to ensure the sale of these handmade products!
As per a report published by PIB in 2022, the overall development of these villages will be taken up where craft promotion and tourism will get a boost together.

I have personally visited Raghurajpur & Anegundi.

Raghurajpur is a must-visit pit stop on your way to the Konark temple. Almost all the homes have an artisan selling local craft. Step into any home, engage with the artisan, ask them questions about the craft and take home a souvenir made by the artisan.

Tip - Block at least 2 hours of your time if you plan to go here( to spend at the village) , even though the Konark Temple officially closes at 8:00 pm, it is a delight to enjoy the space with ample sunlight.

Anegundi is very close to Hampi. It is less than an hour's journey for you to get there. So Anegundi can be coupled with your trip to the historical city of Hampi!

Tip- The Kishkinda Trust is a must visit at Anegundi. They have a banana fibre craft initiative that aims to build the capacity of women at the grassroot level. They have some beautiful products!

Let us know if you have visited any of these craft villages in the comments below!

Anegundi: The Craft Tourism Village That Could Be More!

While exploring Hampi earlier this year, I stumbled upon the Anegundi Craft Tourism Village—a rustic stone signage lured me in with promises of craft-rich streets.

Inside, I found a quaint handicraft store and women weaving banana fibers, empowered by the Kishikinda Trust. A beautiful initiative, no doubt, but it left me craving more.

Koppal district, where Anegundi is located, boasts over 200 artisan homes—yet their presence here seemed limited. Compared to weaving villages I've visited, where every home buzzes with looms, this felt a bit quiet.

Craft tourism has immense potential. Imagine pairing crafts with experiential stays, local food, village walks, and sustainable systems to make it a zero-waste zone. It’s about creating immersive experiences for tourists while using every opportunity to showcase the craft and the culture of that place.

Have you been here? What do you think about craft tourism in India? What more can be done in this sector?

Would love to hear from you !

India is home to over 50 known folk and tribal art styles across India!

With urbanisation and modernisation, many artisans face declining demand, pushing them into other forms of labour.

By employing Indian folk art artisans into larger than life projects such as these! May allow them to sustain their traditional way of life, and earn dignified incomes.

I am tagging .aayog, as I do believe that policy level changes are required in the Handloom and the Handicraft sector.

Tag someone you think can be instrumental in implementing such a project, if you think alike!
