A small bag is a discipline.

It forces you to carry only what truly matters — phone, cards, lipstick, keys — and leave the rest at home. Most women find that, after a week with a small bag, they wonder why they ever carried more.

This is our Maroon Small Owl Bag, made in Bolpur, West Bengal. Genuine leather, hand-embossed with the traditional batik technique that Bolpur has been famous for over generations. Every owl on its surface is pressed in by hand, one careful stamp at a time — there is no machine in this process.

The colour is a deep, rich maroon that pairs effortlessly with the saree colours most women already own — whites, blacks, beiges, deep greens. The size is right for evening dinners, festival outings, and any occasion where a heavy tote would simply look out of place.

We price it between ₹900 and ₹1,500, which is honest for genuine, hand-embossed leather. We can do this because we buy directly from the Bolpur artisans — no middlemen, no markup chain.

Pairing a bag with a handloom saree is something most of us learn by trial and error. Some pairings just work. Others quietly ruin the drape. Here are three rules that actually help — none of them require buying anything new.

1. Strap length - A shoulder bag should sit just above the navel, not at the hip. Hip-level straps pull the saree's pallu sideways and break the drape line within an hour of wearing it. Shortening the strap is usually a 30-second fix.

2. Contrast, not match - A black batik leather bag against a beige Kantha silk saree (like the pairing in this post) reads beautifully because the eye sees the saree first and the bag second. Matching the colours exactly tends to flatten the whole look — the two pieces should be in conversation, not in costume.

3. Carry the bag on the side opposite your pallu. The pallu is the saree's most expressive part. A strap should never cut across it.

Both pieces in this post are handmade in Bengal — the saree by Kantha embroiderers in Murshidabad, the bag by batik leather artisans in Bolpur.

There's a phrase you'll see in Kantha saree listings — *"all-over Kantha"* — and it's worth pausing on, because it changes everything about what you're actually buying.

Most Kantha sarees have embroidery only along the borders, the pallu, or in scattered motifs. *All-over Kantha* means every single inch of the six-yard saree is hand-stitched — no breaks, no shortcuts, no machine help anywhere. One artisan, one needle, one continuous running stitch repeated for **three months or more** to finish a single piece.

The saree pictured here is on a **pure Bishnupur silk** base — handloom-woven in Bishnupur, Bengal, lighter and smoother than Murshidabad silk, with a soft natural sheen that lets the embroidery sit beautifully without competing with it.

Slight irregularities in the stitch? That's not a flaw. That's the proof that no machine touched this. That's a human hand, in a village in Bengal, leaving a record of three patient months in the cloth.

This is what "handmade" really costs in time — and why we think it's worth every minute.

Somewhere along the way, we put Benarasi sarees in a box marked "weddings only" — and never let them out.

But here's the thing: the Benarasi tradition wasn't built for one occasion. The women in our grandmothers' generation wore them to family lunches, evening visits, festival mornings — the saree adapted to the day, not the other way around. The "wedding-only" rule is a recent invention, and it's quietly stopping a lot of beautiful sarees from being lived in.

Our Blue Benarasi is the same authentic Benaras handloom — the zari, the motifs, the patient weaving — at a price that gives you permission to actually wear it. Yes, it's blended silk (not pure silk), and we say so honestly. That's why it's ₹5,000 instead of ₹50,000, and why it can earn its place outside the wedding trousseau.

A few simple ways to wear it through a normal week:
→ With pearl studs and a low bun for a meeting.
→ With oxidised silver jhumkas for brunch.
→ With a contrast mustard or rust blouse for a small festive evening.
→ Even with white sneakers and a watch, if that's your thing. (It works.)

There's a difference between a saree that's *called* khadi and a saree that actually *is* khadi.

Real Khadi is hand-spun on a charkha and hand-woven on a loom — two separate human acts, both done by hand, often by two different people in the same village. No machine spinning. No power loom. Just cotton, patience, and time.

Our Orange Khadi Saree is the real thing. Sourced directly from a weaver community in West Bengal, it's the kind of cotton that actually breathes when Indian summer hits — light enough for the heat, structured enough to drape beautifully, and with a colour that softens gracefully over years of wear.

Khadi has always been more than fabric. It's a tradition that connects every Indian summer wardrobe to a centuries-old craft, and to the hands that still keep it alive.

At ₹1,400, it's the kind of saree that earns its place in your everyday rotation — work, casual gatherings, simple evenings. The price is honest because we source directly. No retail middlemen between the loom and your wardrobe.

A good bag doesn't need to be big to make a statement.

The Maroon Animal Print Shoulder Bag from our collection is compact, structured, and made from genuine leather — hand-batik'd in Bolpur, West Bengal. Every animal print you see was drawn in wax by an artisan, using a traditional resist-dye technique that gives each piece its own slightly unique character. No machine, no stamp, no shortcuts.

This is the bag that goes everywhere. The one you grab without thinking. Small enough for the essentials, distinctive enough to be the thing people notice and ask about.

We source directly from the artisan's workshop in Bolpur — no retail chain between his craft and your doorstep. That's how a genuine leather, handcrafted bag starts at just ₹900.

Available now at loomandlatitude.in — free shipping above ₹1,499, COD available across India, 15-day returns.

What do you always carry in your everyday bag, no matter what? Drop it in the comments — we're genuinely curious what the essentials list looks like!

The owl on this bag wasn't printed by a machine.

It was drawn in wax — by hand — by a leather artisan from Bolpur, West Bengal. Using a centuries-old technique called batik, he applies molten wax to genuine leather in precise patterns, then floods the surface with dye. When the wax is removed, what remains is a design so detailed most people think it was printed.

But look at two bags side by side. They're not identical. They can't be. Because every line was drawn by a human hand.

The owl carries special meaning in Bengali culture — as Goddess Lakshmi's vahana, it symbolises wisdom, prosperity, and abundance. We thought that was the right motif to carry forward.

We source these directly from the artisan's workshop in Bolpur. No middlemen between his craft and your doorstep. That's how a handcrafted genuine leather bag can start at just ₹900.

Available now at loomandlatitude.in — free shipping above ₹1,499, COD available.

Do you know what makes Kantha embroidery genuinely different from what you see in most stores?

Machine embroidery is programmed and done in seconds. Kantha is hand-stitched — one tiny running stitch at a time, by a person, with a needle and thread. On a single saree, an artisan makes thousands of individual stitches. No template. No shortcut. Just decades of skill and a lot of patience.

This Bottle Green Murshidabad Silk Kantha is the result of two crafts meeting: pure silk woven by hand in Murshidabad district, and then hand-embroidered with Kantha stitches by a woman artisan in Bengal. We visit the villages, source directly from the makers, and bring these pieces to you with zero middlemen — which is also why the price is honest.

Akshaya Tritiya falls this Tuesday (April 28). Traditionally a time to invest in something of lasting value. A handmade silk saree made by an artisan who spent weeks on it — that's the kind of thing that only grows more meaningful over time.

Akshaya Tritiya is tomorrow — and if you haven't decided what to wear yet, let us make it easy.

We want to be honest with you about our Benarasi sarees: they're blended silk, not pure silk. We say this upfront on every product page, and we'll say it here too — because we think you deserve to know exactly what you're buying.

What IS genuine: the loom, the weaver's hands, the traditional Benarasi motifs, the real zari threadwork that takes hours to weave into every border. The craft is entirely authentic. Only the yarn is blended.

Our Blue Benarasi is woven in Varanasi on traditional handlooms by skilled weavers who've been doing this for generations. The deep blue is regal and versatile. The zari border is the kind that catches light from across a room. It drapes effortlessly and works beautifully for everything from morning puja to a festive family lunch.

Styling it for tomorrow:
→ Keep jewellery minimal — gold jhumkas, maybe a nath
→ A contrasting blouse in ivory or deep red lifts the look
→ A simple bun lets the border do the talking

Priced at Rs 5,000. Free shipping above Rs 1,499. COD available.

Most people assume the pattern on a leather bag like this one was stamped on by a machine. It wasn't.

This is batik — a wax-resist art technique that artisans in Bolpur, West Bengal have practised for generations. The process is entirely by hand: heated wax is drawn directly onto the leather surface to trace the design. The leather is then dyed. Where the wax sits, the dye can't reach — and when the wax is carefully removed, the pattern is revealed.

It takes longer to apply the batik art than it does to stitch the bag itself. That's the kind of craft we're talking about.

Our Black Big Animal Print Bag is made from genuine leather and hand-batik'd in Bolpur. No two are identical — which, if you think about it, is exactly as it should be.

We source directly from the artisans in Bolpur. No middlemen. When you buy this bag, the person who made it benefits fairly.

Priced from Rs 1500. Free shipping above Rs 1,499. COD available.
