Notes from the curator.

The image of Ganesha on a granite stela in low relief is the oldest securely datable artwork based on inscriptional evidence, according to Padmashree Iravatham Mahadevan. Apart from the inscription, several features point to its antiquity - two arms, not four; no shrew or mouse as the deity’s vehicle.

The stela was excavated in 2009 around an ancient Siva temple in Alagramam, a village in northern Tamilnadu. Two more stelae, that of Siva Lakulisa and Skanda were excavated alongside, all datable to the same period.

The rock-press prints give us a tactile, intimate experience of the divinity and the antiquity more than any other form of reproduction.

Notes from the conservator,

'The art of the mural, now degraded and degrading in its original spaces, medieval temples and palaces, gets a new lease of life on cloth. These 1:1 resist dyed replicas bring alive the sacred galleries, Chitra mandapa, of the temples in Tamilnadu.

The replication is based on detailed documentation, meticulous digital restoration, and a celebrated resist-dye technique of the Coromandel coast, still in practice since its origins more than a millennium ago.'

Restoration, conservation & replica production : Mr M.V. Bhaskar
Resist dye master artist : Mr Patalam Ramachandriah

The Bhavachakra (wheel of Life).

This tour de force of Tibetan Buddhist art is a representation of Samsara and its inherent qualities. A tool used by the practitioners to meditate upon, to ground one self by realising the impermanence of life.

In the centre, is a pig, a snake and a rooster, representing ignorance, aversion and attachment respectively. From these three poisons originates the next cycle of Karma. The third layer represents the six paths of Samsara and the final layer represents the twelve links of dependant arising depicting the interconnected chain of causality.

This whole wheel is held within the grasp of Yama, The God of death, reminding us of the transient and ever-changing nature of Samsara.
